Echeveria 'Agate' Crest
Echeveria 'Agate' Crest is a fascinating crested form of the beautifully coloured Echeveria 'Agate', combining exceptionally plump, rounded leaves with an unusual, sculptural growth habit. Its tightly packed foliage displays a delicate blend of powdery blue, mint green, lavender and rosy pink, creating an intricate arrangement of soft pastel colours.
Distinctive Crested Growth
Unlike the symmetrical rosettes of the standard variety, Echeveria 'Agate' Crest develops irregular, elongated growing points that produce dense clusters of overlapping leaves. This unusual growth pattern, known as fasciation, occurs when the growing tip develops into a broadened or flattened structure rather than a single central point.
As the plant matures, these growing points can form gently undulating, fan-shaped sections or compact, rounded clusters. The closely arranged leaves create a richly textured appearance, with each specimen developing its own distinctive shape. Some sections may also produce partial or normal rosettes, adding further interest to the plant's structure.
Beautiful Pastel Foliage and Seasonal Colour
The thick, rounded leaves retain the characteristic appearance of Echeveria 'Agate', with smooth surfaces and softly curved tips. A delicate coating of natural wax, called farina, gives the foliage its powdery, frosted finish and helps protect the plant from moisture loss and strong sunlight.
Colours range from pale blue-green and silvery lavender to soft pink and peach. Brighter growing conditions and cooler temperatures can encourage stronger rosy tones, particularly across the outer leaves and their rounded tips. The combination of pastel colours and densely clustered foliage makes this crested succulent especially attractive throughout the changing seasons.
Growth Habit and Propagation
Crested growth develops differently from ordinary rosettes, with new leaves emerging along multiple points of the expanding crest. Over time, the plant may become broader and more intricately shaped, although its eventual form depends on growing conditions and the development of individual crested sections.
Occasionally, a crested plant may produce normal rosette growth, a process known as reversion. These rosettes can be left to develop naturally or carefully removed if maintaining the crested appearance is preferred.
Propagation is generally best attempted using healthy stem sections that include established crested growing tissue. Allow cut surfaces to dry and callus before planting in a free-draining succulent mix. Leaf propagation may produce ordinary rosettes rather than preserving the crested growth habit.
For a more traditional rosette with the same beautiful rounded foliage and pastel colouring, explore Echeveria 'Agate', the standard form of this distinctive succulent.
Growing Echeveria 'Agate' Crest
Position in a bright, well-ventilated location with several hours of gentle direct sunlight to encourage healthy, compact growth and attractive colouring. Morning sunlight is ideal, while protection from intense afternoon summer sun may be beneficial during hot Australian weather.
Grow in a quality, free-draining succulent potting mix and water thoroughly once the soil has dried. Avoid allowing moisture to remain trapped between the closely packed leaves, particularly during cooler or humid conditions. Protect from frost and prolonged winter rain, and provide good airflow around the plant to reduce the risk of rot.
With its unusual crested structure, softly coloured foliage and individually sculpted appearance, Echeveria 'Agate' Crest makes a wonderful feature in decorative pots and specialised succulent collections.

Succulents naturally change in colour, size and form throughout the year. Many develop richer colours and more compact growth during periods of seasonal stress, particularly through cooler months and brighter conditions, while warmer or lower-light conditions may produce greener, softer growth.
The plant you receive may therefore vary from the product images depending on the season, its stage of growth and current growing conditions. These natural variations are part of the character of living plants and do not affect their quality or health.
Pickup is available in Seville, Yarra Valley VIC by appointment. Order online as normal and any shipping charge will be automatically refunded after collection, unless you would prefer to receive an additional plant of similar value instead.
