Echeveria 'Agate'
Echeveria 'Agate' is a beautiful, compact succulent admired for its exceptionally plump leaves, softly rounded rosettes and delightful combination of pastel colours. Its thick, fleshy foliage displays shades of mint green, powdery blue and delicate pink, creating a wonderfully soft appearance that becomes increasingly colourful under favourable growing conditions.
Distinctive Foliage and Seasonal Colour
One of the most appealing features of Echeveria 'Agate' is its unusual leaf shape. The short, thick leaves have gently rounded tips and are arranged in a dense, symmetrical rosette. Their substantial, almost pebble-like appearance gives the plant a distinctive sculptural quality, while the closely overlapping foliage creates a beautifully layered display.
A fine coating of natural wax, known as farina, gives the leaves their soft, powdery finish. This protective coating helps reduce moisture loss and provides some protection from strong sunlight. It is best left undisturbed, as touching the leaves can leave permanent marks on the surface.
Colouring varies throughout the year, with soft green and blue tones complemented by rosy pink, mauve and warm peach shades. Under brighter light and cooler temperatures, the outer leaves can develop attractive pink mottling and deeper blushes, contrasting beautifully with the fresh green centre.
Growth Habit and Propagation
Echeveria 'Agate' forms a compact, fleshy rosette that gradually increases in size as new leaves emerge from the centre. Older leaves naturally dry and detach as the plant matures, occasionally exposing a short stem beneath the rosette.
Established plants may produce offsets that can be carefully removed and grown separately. Propagation from healthy leaves or stem cuttings may also be possible, although success can vary. Allow cut surfaces to dry and callus before placing them in a suitable, free-draining propagation mix.
For collectors who appreciate unusual growth forms, this variety is also available as Echeveria 'Agate' Crest, which produces fascinating clusters of plump leaves along irregular, crested growth points rather than a traditional rosette.
Growing Echeveria 'Agate'
Grow in a bright, well-ventilated position with several hours of gentle direct sunlight to maintain compact growth and encourage its attractive pastel colouring. Morning sunlight is particularly beneficial, while protection from intense afternoon summer sun may be necessary in warmer Australian regions.
Plant in a quality, free-draining succulent potting mix and water thoroughly once the soil has dried. Avoid prolonged moisture around the roots and between the tightly packed leaves, particularly during cooler weather. Protect from frost and extended periods of winter rain to help prevent rot and maintain healthy foliage.
With its rounded, colourful leaves and naturally compact form, Echeveria 'Agate' makes a beautiful addition to succulent collections, decorative pots and sheltered outdoor displays.

The plant you receive may therefore vary from the product images depending on the season, its stage of growth and current growing conditions. These natural variations are part of the character of living plants and do not affect their quality or health.
