Echeveria 'Cubic Frost' Crest is a rare crested form of the well-known Echeveria 'Cubic Frost', combining its characteristic frosty blue-grey to lilac foliage with unusual fasciated growth. Instead of developing as a conventional symmetrical rosette, the growing point broadens into a sculptural crest, producing tightly packed foliage along an increasingly complex, fan-like ridge.

Crested, fan-like growth

The crested form develops along a fasciated ridge, with multiple growing points compressed together rather than forming individual conventional rosettes. This produces the distinctive fan-like or coral-like structure, with smaller leaves packed closely together along the crest.

Every plant develops somewhat differently. Established specimens can produce multiple crests as they grow, gradually forming increasingly complex clusters. Occasionally, sections may revert to normal rosette growth. These reverted heads can be left as part of the plant or removed and propagated if desired.

Frosty blue-grey and lilac foliage

The leaves retain the characteristic colouring of 'Cubic Frost', ranging from frosty blue-grey and grey-green through to soft lilac and pinkish-purple according to season and growing conditions. A natural coating of powdery farina gives the foliage its softly frosted appearance and should be handled as little as possible to avoid marking the leaves.

Colour generally becomes stronger with good light and cooler seasonal conditions, while plants in active growth may display softer blue-grey and green tones.

The origins of 'Cubic Frost'

The original Echeveria 'Cubic Frost' is a documented hybrid bred by Renee O'Connell in California from Echeveria 'Doppler' and a proprietary Echeveria identified as 'R-21'. The cross was made in 2011, with 'Cubic Frost' selected for its unusual uplifted foliage, geometric rosette and attractive lilac colouring.

The crested plant offered here is a fasciated form of 'Cubic Frost'. The precise origin of this later crested mutation does not appear to have been formally documented, so we do not attribute the crest to a particular breeder or nursery.

Growing Echeveria 'Cubic Frost' Crest

Grow in a free-draining succulent mix with plenty of bright light and good airflow. Good light helps maintain compact growth and attractive colour, although some protection from intense Australian afternoon summer sun and extreme heat can help prevent scorching.

Water thoroughly when required, allowing the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings. Avoid keeping the roots continuously wet, particularly during cooler periods. As the crest expands it can become increasingly dense, making good airflow around the plant particularly beneficial.
