Hildewintera aureispina f. cristata is a captivating crested cactus admired for its dramatic sculptural form and golden spines. A nursery-bred cultivar derived from the Bolivian species Hildewintera aureispina (now classified as Cleistocactus winteri), this form is a product of cristation—an abnormal but highly decorative growth mutation that causes the stems to fan out into convoluted, undulating ridges. The result is a visually complex and textural plant that forms tangled mounds of fleshy green growth edged with golden spines.
Often referred to as the Crested Golden Rat Tail, this cultivar does not grow in the wild, but it shares the hardy nature of its parent species, which thrives on rocky Andean slopes. In cultivation, it performs well in bright, indirect light to full sun, and appreciates a freely draining, gritty soil mix. It is a relatively fast grower during the warmer months and should be watered only when the soil is fully dry. Overwatering in cool weather can lead to root rot, so a cautious hand is advised during winter.
During spring or early summer, Hildewintera aureispina f. cristata can reward growers with brilliant pink to red funnel-shaped blooms that appear along the sides of the crested stems, offering a spectacular contrast against its wavy green and gold form. While not toxic, the spines can be sharp, so handling with care is recommended.
This crested cactus is ideal for collectors, succulent enthusiasts, and those looking to add a textural focal point to their arid plant collection.
