Sedeveria Letizia Crest

Sedeveria 'Letizia' Crest is the crested or fasciated form of Sedeveria 'Letizia', an intergeneric hybrid between Sedum cuspidatum and Echeveria setosa var. ciliata. Instead of developing only conventional individual growing points, the growth centre becomes elongated, producing the characteristic spreading, contorted form of a crested succulent.

Crested Growth

Cresting, also known as fasciation, changes the normal growth pattern of the plant. As the growing point broadens and elongates, leaves develop along an expanding ridge rather than around a single conventional rosette. Mature plants can consequently form densely packed, curved and irregular growth with numerous leaves following the contours of the crest.

The individual leaves retain the fleshy form and fine marginal cilia characteristic of 'Letizia', while the fasciated growth creates a substantially different overall structure from the regular plant.

Winter Reds & Seasonal Colour

Like regular 'Letizia', the Crest can undergo dramatic seasonal colour changes. During active growth and under milder conditions it can be predominantly green, while environmental stress encourages progressively stronger red pigmentation.

In our nursery, cold winter conditions produce the most intense colour. Crested plants can develop shades of scarlet, red-orange and deep red, with our strongest colouring generally occurring during particularly cold winters, including periods of sub-zero temperatures. The depth of winter colour varies according to conditions and may be considerably less pronounced during milder winters.

Strong summer sunlight combined with heat and reduced moisture can also encourage reddish colouring, although we generally do not see the same depth of colour that develops under cold winter stress. These seasonal changes are normal and a green plant can subsequently develop very strong colour when conditions change.

Growing Sedeveria 'Letizia' Crest

Grow in a free-draining succulent mix in a bright position with good airflow. Strong light helps maintain compact growth and encourages colour development. Acclimatise plants gradually when increasing their exposure to direct sunlight.

Water thoroughly when required and allow the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings. As with other crested succulents, the densely packed and irregular growth can create areas where moisture and debris are retained, so good airflow around the plant is particularly beneficial.

Other Forms of Sedeveria 'Letizia'

The regular Sedeveria 'Letizia' develops conventional branching stems with individual rosettes, while Sedeveria 'Letizia' Variegata combines the characteristic growth of 'Letizia' with cream-variegated foliage.
