Myrtillocactus geometrizans f. cristata, also known as the Dinosaur Back Plant, is a spectacular crested cactus prized for its sculptural, undulating form and striking blue-grey colouration. A rare crested mutation of Myrtillocactus geometrizans, this cultivar features fans of twisted, convoluted growth that resemble the ridged spine of a prehistoric creature—hence its quirky nickname. While crested specimens can occur naturally in central and northern Mexico, most are propagated from unique individuals selected in cultivation.
This slow-growing cactus forms a dramatic silhouette with undulating crests that vary from compact, low ridges to sprawling, irregular shapes. Some plants maintain their crested form stably, while others may partially revert to standard columnar growth over time. Typically spineless or bearing very short spines, the cactus develops a richer, more saturated blue colour when exposed to full sun—although young plants may benefit from protection against the harsh afternoon rays.
Well-suited to warm, arid environments, Myrtillocactus geometrizans f. cristata thrives in sharply draining soil, such as a cactus mix blended with sand or pumice. In Australia, it can be grown outdoors in frost-free areas with minimum winter temperatures above 10 °C, or indoors in a bright, sunlit position. Water sparingly—only when the soil is completely dry—and withhold water entirely in winter to prevent rot. Small, cream-coloured flowers may appear in summer, occasionally followed by sweet, plum-like fruit.
Non-toxic and low-maintenance, this architectural cactus is as much a living sculpture as a plant—perfect for collectors or as a unique statement piece in dry gardens or containers.
