Graptopetalum bernalense Variegata – Cutting
Graptopetalum bernalense Variegata – Succulent Cutting
You will receive one premium Graptopetalum bernalense Variegata cutting of similar size and quality to those shown in the images. We carefully select cuttings with good, balanced variegation and an evenly developing rosette, giving the plant a strong and attractive starting point for future growth.
We avoid selecting extremely variegated or noticeably uneven heads for our cuttings. Strongly one-sided variegation can sometimes result in uneven growth, as foliage containing very little green chlorophyll generally develops more slowly than the greener portions of the same rosette. This can produce a lopsided head with smaller growth on the more heavily variegated side.
As your cutting establishes and develops into a mature plant, new offsets and rosettes may naturally display different degrees and patterns of variegation. This is a normal characteristic of the plant and can result in an attractive mixture of green, cream, pale yellow and seasonally pink growth. The original cutting supplied by us is selected for healthy, balanced variegation rather than extreme or poorly balanced growth.
If you would prefer an established plant, Graptopetalum bernalense Variegata plants are also available when in stock.
Graptopetalum bernalense Variegata is a compact variegated Mexican succulent with fleshy rosettes displaying an attractive mixture of cream, pale yellow and green. Under suitable light and seasonal conditions, the paler portions of the foliage can develop soft pink to peach colouring.
This plant was previously known as Graptopetalum paraguayense subsp. bernalense and may still be encountered under that name in succulent collections. It has since been recognised at species level as Graptopetalum bernalense, which is its currently accepted botanical name. Byrnesia bernalensis is another botanical synonym that has previously been applied to the species.
Plants can gradually produce offsets and develop into attractive multi-rosetted clusters. Although the balanced variegation characteristic of our stock is generally quite stable, individual offsets or growing heads can occasionally develop stronger or weaker variegation as the plant matures.
Before planting, check that the cut end of the stem has dried and formed a firm callus. Once sufficiently callused, plant into a free-draining succulent mix with the stem inserted deeply enough to hold the rosette securely. Keep in bright, protected light while new roots begin to establish, avoiding intense direct sun during this initial period.
Water cautiously while the cutting is establishing. Avoid keeping the growing medium continuously wet before a functional root system has developed. Once established, gradually introduce the plant to brighter conditions. Good light helps maintain compact growth and can encourage the attractive pink colouring that develops through the cream portions of the foliage.
Stem cuttings and offsets are particularly useful for propagating this variegated form because they retain the existing variegated growth. Individual leaves can also propagate in Graptopetalum, but plants produced from variegated leaves may not reliably reproduce the same balance of variegation as the parent plant.

Succulents naturally change in colour, size and form throughout the year. Many develop richer colours and more compact growth during periods of seasonal stress, particularly through cooler months and brighter conditions, while warmer or lower-light conditions may produce greener, softer growth.
The plant you receive may therefore vary from the product images depending on the season, its stage of growth and current growing conditions. These natural variations are part of the character of living plants and do not affect their quality or health.
Pickup is available in Seville, Yarra Valley VIC by appointment. Order online as normal and any shipping charge will be automatically refunded after collection, unless you would prefer to receive an additional plant of similar value instead.
All plants are shipped bare rooted unless otherwise stated. This helps reduce shipping costs, improves plant safety during transit and allows plants to travel more reliably.
