Echeveria 'Dark Vader' Crest is the spectacular crested form of the sought-after Echeveria 'Dark Vader', combining unusual folded foliage, rich seasonal colouring and extraordinary fan-shaped growth. The original 'Dark Vader' was created by Taiwanese hybridiser Volarth Chi from a cross between Echeveria runyonii 'Topsy Turvy' and Echeveria 'Black Prince', resulting in a distinctive hybrid whose character becomes even more dramatic in its crested form.

Distinctive Crested Form

Rather than developing from a single growing point into a conventional rosette, the crested form undergoes a natural growth variation known as fasciation. The growing point broadens into an elongated line, producing densely packed leaves along undulating, fan-shaped growth. As the plant matures, the crest can develop increasingly intricate folds, curves and multiple growing points, with every specimen taking on its own individual form.

The unusual leaf shape reflects the influence of its 'Topsy Turvy' parent, with fleshy leaves that curve upwards and inwards. Combined with the dense crest, this creates a highly sculptural plant that becomes increasingly impressive with age.

Colour & Seasonal Changes

'Black Prince' contributes to the deeper pigmentation of 'Dark Vader', while growing conditions and the seasons can dramatically influence its appearance. Foliage may range from green and muted bronze through warm orange, salmon-pink, red and burgundy tones. Cooler conditions combined with strong light can bring out particularly intense colour, while plants grown under warmer or lower-light conditions may display more green.

For the original single-rosette form, see our Echeveria 'Dark Vader'.

Light & Compact Growth

Crested succulents are best grown slowly and compactly rather than encouraged into rapid, lush growth. Give Echeveria 'Dark Vader' Crest the strongest light it can safely tolerate, gradually acclimating plants when increasing their exposure. Strong appropriate light helps produce denser, sturdier growth, supports the developing crest and encourages the rich colouring for which this cultivar is known.

During very hot Australian weather, protection from extreme afternoon sun may still be necessary to prevent scorching. A plant that has been grown under lower light should never be moved suddenly into intense sun.

Watering & Drainage

Grow in a very free-draining succulent mix and water conservatively, allowing the growing medium to dry thoroughly between waterings. Avoid keeping the plant continually moist or providing extra water simply to encourage faster growth. Slow, firm development is preferable to soft, rapid growth in a mature crest.

The tightly packed folds of a crested plant can also trap moisture more readily than an open rosette, so good airflow is particularly important. Keeping the foliage dry where practical and avoiding prolonged cold, wet conditions will help maintain healthy crested growth.

Feeding & Maintaining a Strong Crest

Fertiliser should be used sparingly with crested succulents. If feeding is required, apply a dilute, low-nitrogen fertiliser only occasionally during active growth. Heavy feeding, particularly with nitrogen-rich fertilisers, can encourage excessively soft and rapid growth, producing an oversized, less compact crest that can become increasingly difficult for the underlying stem to support.

For this reason, resist the temptation to push a crested plant into faster growth. Minimal feeding, conservative watering and strong appropriate light encourage a firmer, stockier and better-supported crest. Crested growth may occasionally produce sections that revert towards normal rosette growth; these can be left for contrast or removed if maintaining the strongly crested form is preferred.

Seasonal Colour & Plant Variation

Succulents naturally change in colour, size and form throughout the year. Many develop richer colours and more compact growth during periods of seasonal stress, particularly through cooler months and brighter conditions, while warmer or lower-light conditions may produce greener, softer growth.

The plant you receive may therefore vary from the product images depending on the season, its stage of growth and current growing conditions. These natural variations are part of the character of living plants and do not affect their quality or health.

Pickup Information

Pickup is available in Seville, Yarra Valley VIC by appointment. Order online as normal and any shipping charge will be automatically refunded after collection, unless you would prefer to receive an additional plant of similar value instead.
