Echeveria 'Dark Vader'
Echeveria 'Dark Vader' is a distinctive Taiwanese hybrid known for its tightly formed rosettes, unusual inward-curving leaves and remarkable seasonal colour. Created by hybridiser Volarth Chi from a cross between Echeveria runyonii 'Topsy Turvy' and Echeveria 'Black Prince', it combines the sculptural foliage of 'Topsy Turvy' with the rich pigmentation associated with 'Black Prince'.
Distinctive Foliage & Form
Echeveria 'Dark Vader' develops compact rosettes that can reach around 15 cm across when mature. Its thick, fleshy leaves have a pronounced inward and upward curve, creating a folded, almost angular appearance that immediately distinguishes it from many conventional Echeveria rosettes.
The influence of Echeveria runyonii 'Topsy Turvy' is particularly evident in the unusual leaf structure, while 'Dark Vader' generally develops a fuller, more compact appearance and considerably stronger pigmentation. Mature plants may also produce offsets, gradually developing into attractive clusters.
Colour & Seasonal Changes
One of the most appealing characteristics of 'Dark Vader' is its ability to change colour throughout the year. Depending on light, temperature and growing conditions, foliage can range from green and bronze through warm pink, red and deep burgundy tones. The combination of these colours with its unusual leaf shape gives the plant a very different appearance as the seasons change.
Strong light and cooler conditions can intensify the darker red and burgundy pigmentation, while plants grown under warmer conditions or with less light may display more green. These natural variations are part of the character of the cultivar rather than an indication of different forms.
Flowers & Growth Habit
Mature plants can produce arching flower stems carrying reddish-orange, bell-shaped flowers, adding another splash of colour above the foliage. Flowering is most commonly associated with the warmer growing period, although timing can vary with local conditions and individual plants.
'Dark Vader' normally develops as a conventional rosette, but occasional plants can produce crested growth through a natural phenomenon known as fasciation. For this unusual form, see our Echeveria 'Dark Vader' Crest.
Light & Growing Conditions
Echeveria 'Dark Vader' is adaptable to a range of light conditions and can grow well in bright light through to part shade. For the most compact growth and strongest pink, red and burgundy colouring, provide as much light as your growing conditions safely allow. Plants receiving stronger sun should be gradually acclimatised, and during very hot Australian weather some protection from intense afternoon sun can help prevent leaf scorching. Combined with conservative watering and minimal feeding, good light encourages slower, firmer growth and helps the plant maintain its characteristic compact form.
A very free-draining succulent mix is essential. Good airflow around the plant is also beneficial, particularly during periods of cool or humid weather. Protect from frost and prolonged cold, wet conditions.
Watering & General Care
Water thoroughly when the plant requires it, then allow the growing medium to dry well before watering again. Avoid keeping the roots continually moist, as Echeveria store considerable moisture within their fleshy leaves and are better suited to a wet-and-dry watering cycle than frequent light watering.
'Dark Vader' does not require heavy feeding. If fertiliser is used, a light application of a suitable succulent fertiliser during active growth is sufficient. Avoid excessive feeding or watering simply to promote faster growth; a more restrained approach encourages firm, compact growth and helps preserve the characteristic form and colour of the rosette.

Succulents naturally change in colour, size and form throughout the year. Many develop richer colours and more compact growth during periods of seasonal stress, particularly through cooler months and brighter conditions, while warmer or lower-light conditions may produce greener, softer growth.
The plant you receive may therefore vary from the product images depending on the season, its stage of growth and current growing conditions. These natural variations are part of the character of living plants and do not affect their quality or health.
Pickup is available in Seville, Yarra Valley VIC by appointment. Order online as normal and any shipping charge will be automatically refunded after collection, unless you would prefer to receive an additional plant of similar value instead.
