Euphorbia polygona ‘Azure’
Euphorbia polygona 'Azure' is a compact Australian cultivar introduced by Paradisia Nurseries, distinguished by its strongly ribbed stems and attractive combination of green and silvery blue-grey colouring. Similar in general character to Euphorbia polygona 'Snowflake', 'Azure' remains shorter, with upright stems reaching around 15 cm and offsets developing from the base as plants mature.
Cool-toned patterned stems
The stems develop numerous prominent ribs with contrasting areas of deep green and pale glaucous colouring. This creates the cool blue-grey appearance reflected in the name 'Azure'. Small reddish-brown structures line the rib margins, while fresh growth around the crown can develop deeper reddish to burgundy tones.
Colour and surface markings naturally vary between individual plants and can change with age, season, light and growing conditions. Compared with the taller-growing Euphorbia polygona, 'Azure' offers similar architectural character in a considerably more compact form.
Compact and slow growing
'Azure' is a slow-growing form that remains relatively compact. Mature plants produce offsets from the base, gradually developing into attractive multi-stemmed specimens while retaining their comparatively short stature.
Flowering occurs around the crown in the specialised structures known as cyathia that are characteristic of Euphorbia. Persistent flower stalks can harden after flowering and contribute to the small spine-like structures along the ribs.
Growing Euphorbia polygona 'Azure'
Grow in a very free-draining succulent mix in full sun to partial shade, with good airflow. Some protection from prolonged winter rain is beneficial, particularly in cooler climates. Plants grown indoors require a bright, well-lit position to maintain compact growth and good colour.
Water during the warmer growing months, allowing the growing medium to drain freely and dry appropriately between waterings. Reduce watering considerably during cool winter conditions. Feed lightly during active growth, as excessive high-nitrogen fertiliser can encourage softer, larger growth with reduced colour.
Like other Euphorbia, 'Azure' produces a white milky latex sap if damaged. The sap can irritate skin and eyes and is harmful if ingested, so avoid contact and wash exposed skin promptly.
