Euphorbia polygona 'Snowflake'
Euphorbia polygona 'Snowflake' is an exceptionally pale, very slow-growing form of the South African Euphorbia polygona complex, prized for its powdery blue-grey to silvery-white stems and contrasting darker growth around the crown. Long cultivated under the name 'Snowflake', this distinctive plant has also been associated with the botanical name Euphorbia polygona var. nivea.
Powdery blue-grey stems
The characteristic pale appearance is produced by a natural waxy coating over the strongly ribbed stems rather than conventional cream or yellow variegation. Depending on the plant and growing conditions, stems can appear blue-grey, silver or almost white, giving 'Snowflake' a much paler appearance than typical Euphorbia polygona.
The natural surface coating can be marked or rubbed if repeatedly handled, so plants are best handled carefully. Older stems may also show natural variation in the amount and distribution of the coating.
Very slow growing
'Snowflake' initially develops as a single upright stem and is notably slow growing. Mature stems can reach around 30 cm under cultivation, although plants can remain compact for many years. Offsets eventually develop from the base of mature plants, allowing older specimens to form attractive clusters.
Its unusual pale colouring has also influenced related cultivated selections, including the shorter Euphorbia polygona 'Azure' and the slender, strongly sculptured Euphorbia polygona 'Zig Zag'.
Small specialised flower structures, known as cyathia, develop around the crown and can provide a strong reddish to purplish contrast against the pale stem. After flowering, the short flower stalks can persist and harden, producing the spine-like structures seen along the ribs.
Growing Euphorbia polygona 'Snowflake'
Grow in a very free-draining succulent mix in full sun to partial shade, with good airflow. Some protection from prolonged winter rain is beneficial in cooler climates. Indoors, provide a bright, well-lit position to maintain compact growth and good stem colour.
Water during the warmer growing months, allowing the growing medium to drain freely and dry appropriately between waterings. Reduce watering considerably during prolonged cool conditions. Light feeding during active growth is sufficient; excessive high-nitrogen fertiliser can encourage softer growth with less desirable form and colour.
Like other Euphorbia, 'Snowflake' produces a white milky latex sap if damaged. The sap can irritate skin and eyes and is harmful if ingested, so avoid contact and wash exposed skin promptly.
