Euphorbia pulvinata
Euphorbia pulvinata, commonly known as Pincushion Euphorbia, is a striking, low-growing succulent native to South Africa and Lesotho. It forms dense, cushion-like clumps of short, cylindrical stems that start off globose before elongating with age. These stems, typically seven-ribbed, feature prominent tubercles and spines that are actually modified sterile peduncles. Depending on the season, these spines range from white to purple, adding to the plant’s distinctive appearance.
The rudimentary leaves of Euphorbia pulvinata are small, linear-lanceolate, and ephemeral, quickly dropping to leave behind tiny white scars along the stems. In late winter and early spring, the plant produces clusters of tiny, cup-shaped cyathia, ranging in colour from yellow and green to purplish-red. These flowers appear at the apex of the stems, creating an attractive contrast against the grey-green body. Following pollination, three-angled capsules develop, containing pale brown seeds.
This Euphorbia thrives in well-draining soil with plenty of sunlight, making it well-suited to rock gardens, xeriscapes, and container cultivation. Unlike many succulents, it does not tolerate prolonged drought and benefits from moderate watering during the warmer months, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Propagation is best done through cuttings, ensuring the milky latex is washed off and the cut end is allowed to dry before planting.
As with all Euphorbias, the sap of Euphorbia pulvinata is toxic and can cause skin irritation or eye discomfort, making careful handling essential. Its compact growth habit and unique structure make it a fascinating addition to any succulent collection.

Pickup is available in Seville, Yarra Valley VIC by appointment. Order online as normal and any shipping charge will be automatically refunded after collection, unless you would prefer to receive an additional plant of similar value instead.
