Euphorbia polygona ‘Zig Zag’

Euphorbia polygona 'Zig Zag' is a compact Australian cultivar introduced by Paradisia Nurseries, characterised by slender upright stems, strongly sculptured ribs and attractive pale blue-grey to silvery colouring. Similar in general appearance to Euphorbia polygona 'Snowflake', it develops thinner stems that reach approximately 10 cm in height.

Distinctive sculptured ribs

The pronounced rib margins develop an undulating, angular profile that gives 'Zig Zag' much of its distinctive character. A pale glaucous coating can give the stems a silver-grey to almost white appearance, contrasting with areas of underlying green.

Fresh growth around the crown can develop attractive reddish to burgundy tones, while the structures lining the ribs become more pronounced as the stems mature. The combination of pale colouring and strongly defined ribs gives even relatively young plants a remarkably architectural appearance.

Small, slow growing and clustering

'Zig Zag' is slow growing and remains comparatively small, with individual stems reaching around 10 cm tall. Mature plants produce offsets from the base, gradually forming compact clusters of slender upright stems. Its smaller, narrower growth provides an interesting contrast with the broader stems of Euphorbia polygona 'Azure' and the larger-growing Euphorbia polygona.

Small specialised Euphorbia flower structures, known as cyathia, develop around the crown. Persistent flower stalks can subsequently harden into spine-like structures along the ribs, further accentuating the geometric form of the plant.

Growing Euphorbia polygona 'Zig Zag'

Grow in a very free-draining succulent mix in full sun to partial shade, with good airflow. A partially protected position is beneficial where plants would otherwise receive prolonged winter rain. Indoors, provide a bright, well-lit position, as insufficient light can result in elongated growth and reduced colour.

Water during the warmer growing months, allowing the growing medium to drain freely and dry appropriately between waterings. Reduce watering substantially during cool winter conditions. Feed lightly during active growth rather than using strong or high-nitrogen fertilisers, which can encourage larger, softer growth at the expense of compact form and colour.

Like other Euphorbia, 'Zig Zag' produces a white milky latex sap if damaged. The sap can irritate skin and eyes and is harmful if ingested, so avoid contact and wash exposed skin promptly.
