Graptopetalum paraguayense ssp. bernalense variegated, also known as Byrnesia bernalensis variegata and Graptopetalum bernalense variegated, is a captivating variety of Ghost Plant. This species, native to the Tamaulipas region in Mexico, thrives in crevices of vertical porphyric and igneous rocks among diverse vegetation like oaks, pines, and ferns. Its natural habitat has endowed it with remarkable adaptability, making it an ideal choice for Australian climates.

The plant is notable for its relatively modest size, growing up to 20 cm tall with mature rosettes reaching about 7 cm in diameter. Gardeners have the option to prune the plant to encourage branching, using the cuttings to propagate new plants, or to let it sprawl naturally. When left to grow uninhibited, it tends to act as a ground cover, rooting wherever stems touch the ground. This variegated variety is not only visually striking but also a testament to the plant's robustness and ease of care.

Ghost Plants are celebrated for their minimal water needs. They have evolved to store ample water reserves in their thick, fleshy leaves, enabling them to endure extended dry periods effortlessly. Despite their resilience, they flourish best with good drainage, abundant sunlight, and a well-balanced, quarter-strength fertilizer during the growing season.

While Ghost Plants can tolerate full sun, they prefer light shade, which provides an optimal balance for growth and health. The ideal soil for these plants should be gritty, porous, and well-draining, yet capable of retaining the necessary moisture. During the summer growing season, they require more water compared to other succulents. However, in winter, watering should be minimal, just enough to prevent the foliage from shriveling. A light application of fertilizer in early spring, diluted to a quarter of the recommended rate, is sufficient for their nutritional needs.

Graptopetalum paraguayense ssp. bernalense variegated is a versatile addition to any garden, rockery, gravel garden, or hanging basket. Its stunning variegated leaves, ease of propagation, and adaptability make it a must-have for any plant enthusiast. Whether in an outdoor garden or as part of an indoor plant collection, it's a low-maintenance choice that adds aesthetic appeal to any setting.
