Sedum hybrid

Sedum Hybrid is a hardy, colourful succulent with glossy, fleshy leaves that develop beautiful shades of green, gold, copper and rich orange-red. Although its exact parentage and cultivar name are unknown, we have grown this attractive little Sedum for many years and particularly value it for its toughness, easy care and wonderful response to bright outdoor conditions.

Glossy Foliage with Beautiful Seasonal Colour

One of the most appealing features of this Sedum hybrid is its unusually glossy foliage. The small, plump leaves have a smooth, lustrous surface that catches the light beautifully, giving well-coloured plants an almost glowing appearance. Fresh growth can be bright green, while older and more exposed foliage develops increasingly warm golden, coppery orange and reddish-orange tones.

Colour varies considerably with growing conditions. Plants receiving plenty of direct sun and allowed to experience some natural dryness generally develop the strongest warm colouring, often combining vivid green centres with glowing orange-red outer leaves and tips. In softer conditions or with more regular water, plants tend to remain considerably greener. This natural variation means the plant can look quite different through the seasons while retaining its characteristic glossy foliage.

A Hardy Succulent for Full Sun

This is an especially tough and forgiving little succulent that performs very well outdoors. It enjoys bright conditions and can be grown in full sun once properly acclimatised, making it an excellent choice for sunny pots, mixed succulent displays and other exposed positions where more delicate succulents may struggle.

Grow in a free-draining succulent mix and water thoroughly when required, allowing the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings. Like many Sedums, it copes well with periods of dryness, and a combination of strong light and moderately dry growing conditions can help bring out its richest colouring.

Growth Habit & Pruning

Young growth forms attractive compact clusters of closely arranged leaves, but the stems continue to lengthen as the plant matures and can eventually become somewhat leggy if left unpruned. Although it does branch naturally, occasional pruning is an excellent way to encourage a denser, bushier plant.

Cutting back longer stems stimulates new shoots below the pruning point, gradually creating a fuller, small shrubby specimen with multiple growing tips. This also makes it easy to control the plant's shape and rejuvenate older plants that have become too open or elongated.

Easy to Propagate

The stems removed during pruning need not be wasted, as this Sedum is very easily propagated from cuttings. Healthy stem pieces can be allowed to callus before being placed into a free-draining succulent mix, where they will readily establish and develop into new plants. Regular pruning and replanting of selected cuttings can also be used to create particularly full, multi-stemmed pots.

Flowers

When mature, plants can produce clusters of small white flowers from the growing tips. The delicate blooms provide a lovely contrast against the glossy green, gold and coppery foliage and add another dimension to this easy-growing succulent.
