Pachyphytum compactum, also known as Little Jewel, is a stunning succulent that originates from the Mexican states of Queretaro and Hidalgo. This plant grows in shady cliffs at altitudes of around 2000 meters. It is a short-stemmed succulent that often branches towards the base and can reach up to 15 cm tall, but can grow up to 40 cm long if pendent. It forms tightly packed rosettes of 30 to 80, mostly congested leaves.

The leaves of Pachyphytum compactum are thick, fleshy, and tubular in shape, with pointed tips and angular facets on the upper surface created by neighboring leaves' pressure. They are usually matted green or tinged violet when gently stressed, and up to 4 cm long and 1.5 cm wide. The leaves have a distinctive pattern of white veins and are often purplish in color.

In late spring, Pachyphytum compactum produces barrel-shaped flowers that are red to orange with dark green or dark violet tips. The flowers are held above the foliage on up to 30 cm long stems.

To grow and care for Pachyphytum compactum, ensure that it is planted in well-draining soil and placed in full or partial sunlight. Allow the soil to dry before watering and avoid getting water on the leaves. This plant can tolerate poor soil conditions and is far more likely to survive under-watering than overwatering. It does not tolerate frost well and should be protected from temperatures below 7°C.

One of the most common pests for this plant is mealybugs, which can cause slowed or stopped growth. If an infestation occurs, remove the plant from the pot and examine the roots or look at the leaf-stem junctions.

Overall, Pachyphytum compactum is a beautiful and low-maintenance succulent that can add interest to any indoor or outdoor space. Its distinct patterned leaves and vibrant flowers make it a favorite among succulent enthusiasts.
