Introducing Pachyphytum 'Orange Snow Ball'

Overview

The Pachyphytum 'Orange Snow Ball' is a delightful mix of resilience and charm, perfect for any plant collection. Originally introduced and misclassified as a Graptoveria, its distinctive flowers confirmed its true identity as a Pachyphytum. Nevertheless, it may still be found under the name Graptoveria 'Orange Snow Ball' due to its earlier classification.

Description

Originating from Korea, this hybrid is a testament to the best features of its parentage. Its ability to change leaf color based on nutrient levels is particularly captivating. With a limited nutrient supply, the leaves turn beautiful shades of pink and orange and stay small and round. The plant's size can be managed by both pot size and nutrient intake. While a mature, two-year-old plant might reach up to 15cm in height and 20cm wide, confining it to a smaller pot and moderating nutrients can keep it more compact, enhancing its desired form and colors.

Scientific Classification

  • Family: Crassulaceae
  • Subfamily: Sedoideae
  • Tribe: Sedeae
  • Subtribe: Sedinae
  • Genus: Pachyphytum

Origins

This hybrid cultivar, stemming from Korea, was initially thought to result from a cross between Graptopetalum amethystinum 'Lavender Pebbles' and Echeveria Orange Monroe. However, its distinctive flowers confirmed its true identity as a product of Pachyphytum parentage.

Conclusion

The Pachyphytum 'Orange Snow Ball' seamlessly combines beauty with low-maintenance needs. A great fit for both novice and expert gardeners, its color-changing capabilities and manageable size make it a standout choice. Whether under its Pachyphytum name or its former Graptoveria title, this plant never fails to impress.
