Aloe 'Christmas Carol' is a striking hybrid succulent created by renowned breeder Kelly Griffin, likely incorporating Aloe 'Doran Black' as one of its parents. This small, slow-growing plant forms rosettes of dark green leaves adorned with vivid red edges and yellow to deep crimson bumps, making it a visual delight for any garden or indoor collection. Under full sun exposure, the plant’s red hues become even more pronounced, enhancing its festive appearance.
Reaching up to 30 cm in height and nearly equal in diameter, Aloe 'Christmas Carol' boasts thick, fleshy, lance-shaped leaves up to 15 cm long. From fall to winter, it produces charming reddish-pink to orange flowers that bloom atop long spikes, adding a burst of color to its surroundings.
When cultivating Aloe 'Christmas Carol', ensure it receives ample bright, indirect light if grown indoors, preferably near a southern or southwest-facing window. Outdoors, it thrives best with some light shade during the hottest parts of the day. Plant it in well-draining soil designed for succulents to prevent root rot from excess moisture.
This resilient aloe can tolerate temperatures ranging from -3.9 to 10 °C, making it suitable for Australian hardiness zones similar to USDA zones 9b to 11b. While Aloe 'Christmas Carol' enjoys regular watering, it is quite drought-tolerant for short periods. Water deeply only when the soil is dry, and reduce watering during winter.
Though not a heavy feeder, this aloe may benefit from occasional fertilizing to boost its growth. Repotting is rarely necessary due to its slow growth, but if needed, do so in spring with a container slightly larger than the current one. Propagation is straightforward, typically achieved through offsets, cuttings, or seeds from mature plants.
Aloe 'Christmas Carol' is a captivating addition to any succulent collection, offering both visual appeal and easy maintenance.
