Aloe Haworthioides
Aloe haworthioides is a petite, stemless succulent native to Madagascar, admired for its fine, bristly texture and compact clumping habit. Belonging to the Asphodelaceae family, this distinctive species forms dense colonies of small rosettes that resemble a cross between an Aloe and a Haworthia. Its botanical name reflects this similarity, as the foliage closely mimics the soft, spined appearance of Haworthia species while retaining classic Aloe flower structure.
Each rosette typically grows 5–10 cm in diameter, gradually forming tidy clusters up to around 10 cm wide. The narrow, lanceolate leaves are deep green and covered in soft, white, hair-like marginal spines and fine surface bristles, giving the plant a delicate yet architectural look. Unlike sharp Aloe species, the spines are flexible and feathery to the touch. In late summer to autumn, mature plants send up slender flower spikes reaching approximately 30 cm tall, topped with small tubular blooms in shades of orange, coral or pale pink. The flowers are lightly fragrant and highly attractive to pollinators.
Well suited to Australian conditions, Aloe haworthioides performs best in bright light to full sun, where it maintains a compact form and rich colouring. It thrives in a free-draining succulent mix with added coarse sand or gravel to replicate its native rocky habitats. Water thoroughly but only once the soil has dried out completely, reducing frequency during cooler months. It tolerates temperatures down to around 4.5°C if kept dry, though protection from frost is advisable.
Slow-growing and ideal for small pots, succulent bowls and rockeries, Aloe haworthioides also plays an important role in hybrid breeding, contributing its compact form to cultivars such as Aloe ‘Pepe’.

The plant you receive may therefore vary from the product images depending on the season, its stage of growth and current growing conditions. These natural variations are part of the character of living plants and do not affect their quality or health.
Pickup is available in Seville, Yarra Valley VIC by appointment. Order online as normal and any shipping charge will be automatically refunded after collection, unless you would prefer to receive an additional plant of similar value instead.
