Corpuscularia lehmannii Variegata - Variegated Ice Plant

Corpuscularia lehmannii ‘Variegata’, commonly known as the Variegated Ice Plant, is a compact succulent distinguished by its chunky, angular leaves patterned in soft green, cream and pale yellow. It is a variegated cultivated form of a South African species known for its unusual geometric foliage and dense, gradually spreading growth.

Distinctive angular foliage

The thick, fleshy leaves are arranged in opposite pairs and have a strongly three-dimensional, almost sculptural appearance. Variegation creates irregular areas of green, cream and yellow, with the balance and pattern differing naturally from leaf to leaf and between individual plants.

As plants mature, the branching stems gradually spread and develop into dense, low-growing clumps. This compact habit makes ‘Variegata’ particularly well suited to pots, succulent arrangements and rockeries where its unusual foliage can be appreciated at close range.

South African origins

The underlying species is native to a restricted area of the Eastern Cape of South Africa, where it occurs naturally on quartzite outcrops and in rocky crevices around the coastal region near Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth). These naturally rocky habitats reflect the plant's preference for excellent drainage in cultivation.

The species has traditionally been widely cultivated under the name Corpuscularia lehmannii, although it is also botanically classified as Delosperma lehmannii.

Flowers

Established plants can produce daisy-like flowers during the warmer growing season. The flowers are approximately 4 cm across and provide an attractive contrast against the thick, angular foliage.

Growing Corpuscularia lehmannii ‘Variegata’

Grow in a very free-draining succulent mix with plenty of bright light. Good light helps maintain compact growth and attractive variegation, although some protection from intense Australian summer afternoon sun can be beneficial, particularly for plants grown in small pots.

Water thoroughly during active growth, allowing the growing medium to dry between waterings. Avoid prolonged wet conditions, particularly during colder weather, as consistently cold and damp soil can cause root problems. Once established, the plant has relatively modest water requirements and responds particularly well to good airflow and excellent drainage.
