Sedum greggii
Sedum greggii is a compact Mexican stonecrop with tightly overlapping fleshy leaves arranged around short stems, producing the distinctive cone-like shoots clearly visible in mature plants. It develops into a low, spreading clump, with numerous new shoots emerging around established growth.
Compact Cone-Shaped Growth
The small green leaves are densely arranged around the stems, creating tightly packed shoots that resemble miniature cones. New growth is particularly compact, gradually elongating as the stems develop. Plants can spread and branch from the base, eventually producing a dense colony of upright and spreading shoots.
The bright green colouring can vary with season, light and growing conditions. Its small leaves and closely packed growth give Sedum greggii a noticeably different form from many of the larger-leaved Sedum commonly grown in cultivation.
A Mexican Sedum Species
Sedum greggii is an accepted botanical species native to Mexico and was formally described by William Botting Hemsley in 1878. Its recorded natural distribution extends across several regions of Mexico, where it occurs as a succulent subshrub.
The species belongs to the Crassulaceae family and stores moisture within its fleshy leaves and stems, helping established plants tolerate periods of dry conditions.
Flowers & Seasonal Growth
Flowering stems rise above the compact foliage and carry small yellow, star-shaped flowers typical of many Sedum species. Flowering and the amount of stem elongation can vary according to season and growing conditions.
After flowering, plants continue to develop new shoots and branching growth, gradually increasing the size and density of the clump.
Growing Sedum greggii
Grow in a free-draining succulent mix in a bright position with good airflow. Good light helps maintain the plant's compact growth, while insufficient light can encourage softer, more elongated stems.
Water thoroughly when required and allow the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings. As with many compact Sedum, good drainage is particularly important during cool or prolonged wet conditions. Established plants tolerate dry periods well, while plants growing in small containers may require more regular watering during warm weather.

Pickup is available in Seville, Yarra Valley VIC by appointment. Order online as normal and any shipping charge will be automatically refunded after collection, unless you would prefer to receive an additional plant of similar value instead.
