Sedum greggii is a charming, compact stonecrop prized for its neat growth habit, attractive seasonal colour changes, and excellent drought tolerance. Native to the rocky hillsides of southwestern Texas and extending through the Chihuahuan Desert into the Mexican state of San Luis Potosí, it thrives in well-drained, mineral-rich soils where rainfall is often scarce. This resilient species naturally grows at elevations of approximately 1,520 to 2,740 metres, making it well adapted to bright conditions and fluctuating temperatures.
Forming dense, cone-shaped rosettes, Sedum greggii produces small, fleshy leaves that are oblanceolate to elliptical with softly rounded tips. Throughout much of the year, the foliage creates a tidy, textured mound, while seasonal growth produces attractive elongated stems that add further architectural interest. In summer, slender flowering stems rise to around 15 cm above the foliage, carrying clusters of cheerful, star-shaped sulphur-yellow flowers, sometimes marked with delicate reddish speckling along the centre of each petal. These blooms are highly attractive to bees and other beneficial pollinators.
Like many members of the Crassulaceae family, Sedum greggii stores water within its leaves, allowing it to cope remarkably well with dry periods once established. It performs best in a sunny position with excellent drainage and is ideal for rockeries, alpine gardens, raised beds, gravel gardens, living walls, and decorative containers. In much of Australia it is hardy enough to tolerate light frosts provided the soil remains free draining and plants are not left sitting in winter moisture.
Named in honour of American explorer and naturalist Josiah Gregg (1806–1850), this delightful species combines botanical history with practical garden performance. Its compact habit, bright summer flowers, and easy-care nature make Sedum greggii a rewarding choice for collectors and gardeners seeking an attractive, low-maintenance succulent with year-round appeal.
