Phedimus spurius 'Dragon's Blood' (formerly known as Sedum spurium 'Dragon's Blood') is a captivating succulent perfect for adding vibrant color to any garden. Originating from Germany, this cultivar was developed under the name Sedum spurium 'Schorbuser Blut' but is widely sold as 'Dragon's Blood'. Recently reclassified, it now belongs to the genus Phedimus.
This evergreen perennial forms low-growing mats, reaching up to 10 cm in height and spreading up to 45 cm wide. Its creeping stems root at the nodes, creating a dense and attractive ground cover. The foliage starts green with purple-red margins in spring, turning entirely red by autumn, providing a dynamic seasonal display. In winter, the plant goes partially dormant and sheds some of its leaves.
The star-shaped flowers of Phedimus spurius 'Dragon's Blood' appear in clusters from mid-summer to autumn, ranging from pink to red. These blooms are not only visually appealing but also attract butterflies, adding to the garden's ecological diversity.
Thriving in full sun, this plant tolerates light shade but prefers well-drained soils to prevent root rot. It can endure Australian climate conditions, handling temperatures as low as -34°C. Phedimus spurius 'Dragon's Blood' is drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering, making it an excellent choice for low-maintenance gardens.
Propagation is straightforward, with options including seeds, division, or stem cuttings. This plant is mildly toxic to humans and animals, so it should be handled with care.
