Sempervivum 'Lilac Time' is a striking perennial succulent that dazzles with its ever-changing colours, shifting from soft lilac and metallic pink to hints of silver-green throughout the seasons. This cultivar, attributed to Milton, forms elegant, open rosettes that resemble water lilies, creating a delicate yet resilient presence in rock gardens, succulent arrangements, and alpine displays. Like all Sempervivum, it is exceptionally hardy, withstanding temperatures as low as -30°C, making it a reliable choice for gardens in even the coldest climates.
Thriving in full sun, Sempervivum 'Lilac Time' develops its richest hues under bright light, though it can tolerate lower light levels. It prefers gritty, well-draining soil and benefits from a gravel mulch to keep moisture away from the base of the plant. While drought-tolerant once established, this succulent performs best with thorough but infrequent watering, ensuring that excess moisture drains away completely to prevent rot.
Propagation is effortless, as Sempervivum naturally produces offsets, or "chicks," on short stolons. These can be left to form dense, spreading clusters or separated and transplanted to new locations. Growth is most active during spring and summer, with watering needed only when the soil is dry. In extreme heat, afternoon shade can help maintain the plant’s vigour.
Low-maintenance and visually captivating, Sempervivum 'Lilac Time' is an excellent addition to outdoor succulent collections, bringing seasonal colour shifts, architectural form, and remarkable cold-hardiness to any well-draining garden setting.
