Crassula deltoidea variegata is a visually stunning succulent that is perfect for pot cultivation. This perennial dwarf succulent is a variegated form of Crassula deltoidea and boasts highly succulent leaves that are deltoid or rhombic in shape. The leaves are covered with a grey flaking layer of wax, giving the plant a unique and fascinating appearance. The variegation of this form can range from pale cream to bright white, with occasional green patches. When under stress, the leaves take on pink, orange and red tones, deepening in color until they are rehydrated, at which point the lighter creamy-colored variegation returns.
This plant has creamy white flowers that are urn-shaped and borne in sets of two to three branched inflorescences that arise from the tip of each branch. The flowering time is between August and September in the southern hemisphere.
Although Crassula deltoidea variegata is fairly slow-growing compared to other Crassula species, it can still grow into a sizeable plant and flower over time. In the wild, it is typically found growing singly out in the open on arid gravel plains, blending in somewhat with the surrounding stones. Its natural distribution extends from the southern parts of Namibia, Bushmanland, the Tanqua Karoo, and southern parts of the Great Karoo as far east as Prince Albert.
Cultivating Crassula deltoidea variegata is relatively easy, as it prefers well-drained gritty soils with a low organic content, good ventilation, and bright light. It is recommended to cultivate this species in a pot rather than in open soil, and a sunny windowsill or outdoor spot with full sun should work well. Water sparingly and only when the plant becomes soft to the touch, as it is highly drought-adapted and requires minimal watering. Overwatering can result in fungal attacks and rotting. Feeding is not necessary and may cause lush growth that ruins the refined nature of the plant.
Propagation of Crassula deltoidea variegata is easy from cuttings, particularly leaf cuttings, at any time of the year. Leaf cuttings can be easily bulked up, and rooting should start to take place within two weeks. If one could ever acquire seed, this could be sown in autumn.
Overall, Crassula deltoidea variegata is a visually stunning and unique succulent that is easy to cultivate and propagate. Its striking appearance makes it a desirable addition to any collection.
