Echeveria 'Cubic Frost' Crest Variegata is a rare crested and variegated form of the popular Echeveria 'Cubic Frost', combining its thick, twisting foliage with both variegation and unusual fasciated growth. Instead of developing as a conventional rosette, the growing point broadens into a sculptural crest, producing dense, undulating foliage in shades of cream, soft lavender, blue-green and pale green.

Crested, coral-like growth

The crested form develops along a fasciated ridge rather than from a single conventional growing point. Multiple growing points become compressed along this ridge, creating the broad, fan-like or coral-like formation that gives mature plants their remarkable architectural appearance.

Every crest develops differently. Some remain relatively compact and tightly folded, while others gradually broaden and branch into increasingly complex forms. This natural variation is an important part of the character of crested succulents, with no two mature plants developing exactly alike.

Variegation and seasonal colour

Variegation can vary considerably across the crest, with individual leaves displaying different combinations of cream, pale yellow, green, blue-grey and lavender. Cooler conditions and strong light can also encourage pink and purple tones, while the balance of colour changes naturally through the seasons and according to growing conditions.

The foliage carries a generous coating of powdery farina, giving the plant its characteristic soft, silvery appearance. This natural coating should be handled as little as possible, as fingerprints and rubbing can permanently disturb the farina on individual leaves.

From the original 'Cubic Frost'

The original Echeveria 'Cubic Frost' is a documented hybrid bred by Renee O'Connell in California from Echeveria 'Doppler' and a proprietary Echeveria identified as 'R-21'. It was selected in 2011 for its unusual uplifted foliage, geometric growth and attractive lilac colouring.

This plant represents both variegated and crested growth within 'Cubic Frost'. The precise origin of these later mutations does not appear to have been formally documented, so we do not attribute the variegated crested form to a particular breeder or nursery.

Growing Echeveria 'Cubic Frost' Crest Variegata

Grow in a sharply draining succulent mix with plenty of bright light and good airflow. Morning sun or bright filtered light is particularly useful during warmer conditions, while protection from intense Australian afternoon summer sun can help prevent scorching of the paler variegated foliage.

Water thoroughly when required, then allow the growing medium to dry appropriately before watering again. Avoid keeping the roots continuously wet. Crested and strongly variegated plants can grow more slowly than regular 'Cubic Frost', and growth rate will vary according to the amount of variegation and the development of the crest.
