Echeveria 'Rezry' Variegated (red variegation)

Echeveria 'Rezry' Variegated is the red-variegated form associated with Echeveria 'Manaudes', producing compact clusters of small fleshy rosettes patterned in green, cream, pink, orange and deep red. The amount and distribution of variegation varies naturally between leaves and individual growing points, with seasonal conditions capable of producing particularly intense colouring.

Red Variegation

The variegation develops as irregular sectors, stripes and patches through the fleshy leaves, where green chlorophyll-containing tissue contrasts with cream, yellow, pink and red areas. Individual rosettes can vary considerably, and different growing points within the same mature cluster may display different amounts and patterns of variegation.

Colour is also strongly influenced by growing conditions. The red, pink and orange tones can become considerably more pronounced under suitable light and seasonal conditions, while actively growing plants may display softer combinations of green, cream and pink.

A Variegated Form of 'Manaudes'

'Rezry' has also been distributed in cultivation under the name 'Manaudes', and the close relationship between the two is particularly evident in their compact leaf form and freely clustering growth habit.

We have also observed the relationship directly in our own nursery. Our original 'Rezry'-type red-variegated plant arose spontaneously from one of our established non-variegated Echeveria 'Manaudes' plants. The new growth developed the characteristic red, cream and pink variegation while otherwise retaining the appearance and growth habit of 'Manaudes'.

Only one of our 'Manaudes' plants produced this spontaneous variegation. We later obtained additional plants sold as 'Rezry' Variegated so that we could build sufficient stock for sale rather than waiting to propagate large numbers from our single original plant.

Compact Clustering Growth

Like regular 'Manaudes', 'Rezry' Variegated readily develops offsets and can gradually form a dense cluster containing numerous small rosettes. This naturally branching habit also provides multiple growing points from which the variegation can be expressed differently as the plant develops.

Because the amount of variegation varies naturally, some rosettes may contain considerably more green tissue while others develop stronger cream, pink or red sectors. This variation is part of the normal growth of the plant rather than a fixed colour pattern.

Growing Echeveria 'Rezry' Variegated

Grow in a free-draining succulent mix in a bright position with good airflow. Good light helps maintain compact growth and encourages stronger seasonal colouring. Variegated portions containing less chlorophyll can be more sensitive to intense sunlight, so plants should be acclimatised gradually to stronger light and given protection from prolonged harsh Australian summer afternoon sun.

Water thoroughly when required and allow the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings. Established plants readily produce offsets, making division or stem propagation possible once individual growing points are sufficiently developed. When propagating, select growth displaying the variegation you wish to maintain.
