Graptoveria 'Opalina Silk' Variegata
Graptoveria 'Opalina Silk' Variegata is a beautiful variegated form associated with the much-loved Graptoveria 'Opalina', admired for its substantial pastel rosettes, softly blended variegation and exceptionally heavy powdery bloom. Its thick, fleshy leaves combine cool blue-green and lavender tones with irregular areas of cream, pale yellow and soft green, often developing delicate blush-pink, peach and lilac highlights as growing conditions change.
Soft Pastel Variegation & Porcelain-Like Foliage
The beauty of 'Opalina Silk' Variegata lies in the subtlety of its colouring. Rather than displaying harsh bands of variegation, many leaves show softly mottled or blended patterns that merge beautifully with the underlying blue-lavender foliage. Individual rosettes can vary considerably, with some leaves showing stronger cream or yellow sectors while others display pale green, blue, lavender and pink.
A particularly heavy coating of natural farina covers the foliage, creating the frosted, almost porcelain-like finish seen in our plants. This protective powdery bloom should be handled as little as possible, as fingerprints and rubbing can permanently mark individual leaves until they are eventually replaced by new growth.
The Opalina Heritage
Graptoveria 'Opalina' is a recognised intergeneric hybrid between Graptopetalum amethystinum and Echeveria colorata, created by Californian succulent breeder Robert Grim and published in 1988. Those parents help explain the thick, softly coloured foliage and beautifully structured rosettes for which 'Opalina' is renowned.
'Opalina Silk' Variegata is grown as a variegated form associated with this cultivar. Reliable documentation establishing when or by whom this particular variegated selection originated is limited, so we prefer not to attribute a breeder or discovery history without supporting evidence.
Beautiful Winter Pink Colour
One of the most appealing characteristics of Graptoveria 'Opalina Silk' Variegata is its seasonal colour change. During the cooler months, particularly through an Australian autumn and winter, the rosettes can develop a beautiful pink blush over their naturally cool blue, lavender and cream colouring. Pink is often strongest around the leaf tips and margins before spreading more broadly across the foliage, giving mature rosettes a wonderfully soft, opalescent appearance.
Cool temperatures combined with good light encourage this winter colouring, while warmer conditions and active growth generally bring softer blue-green, cream and lavender tones back into prominence. The intensity will vary between individual plants and growing conditions, but this ability to blush pink during cooler weather is one of the most attractive features of 'Opalina Silk' Variegata and gives the plant noticeably different seasonal appearances throughout the year.
Growth & Flowering
The plant develops compact rosettes of broad, fleshy leaves and can gradually produce offsets around the base, eventually forming an attractive multi-headed specimen. Variegated growth can be slower than the standard green form because cream and pale areas of the leaves contain less chlorophyll.
Mature Graptoveria 'Opalina' produces flower stems carrying small bell-shaped flowers in warm yellow to orange tones, providing an attractive contrast against the cool pastel foliage. Flowering may vary according to plant maturity and growing conditions.
Growing Graptoveria 'Opalina Silk' Variegata
Grow in a very free-draining succulent mix with plenty of bright light and good airflow. Sufficient light helps maintain compact growth and encourages the strongest pastel colouring, although variegated foliage can be more vulnerable to scorching than the standard form. In Australian conditions, gradually acclimatise plants to stronger light and provide protection from severe summer afternoon sun where necessary.
Water thoroughly when required, then allow the growing medium to dry well before watering again. Avoid continually damp soil, particularly during cooler weather. Heavy fertilising is unnecessary; relatively lean growing conditions generally encourage firmer, more compact growth and help preserve the refined appearance of the rosettes.
