Aeonium 'Picasso'

Sale price $12.50 Regular price $17.50

Aeonium ‘Picasso’ is a striking variegated cultivar of Aeonium arboreum, admired for its painterly blend of colours and architectural form. Native to the Canary Islands, this cultivar has become a favourite among succulent enthusiasts, with Aeonium arboreum cv. Picasso standing out for its unusual variegation. Its spoon-shaped rosettes feature creamy white to lime-green streaks through the centre of each leaf, bordered by rich green and purple margins. When grown in strong light or under mild stress, the foliage takes on deeper tones, with purples and reds intensifying to create an almost hand-painted effect.

Like other arboreum types, ‘Picasso’ grows as a small, tree-like succulent with branching stems that carry clusters of rosettes, giving it an architectural presence in the garden or a pot. Its unique variegation is thought to have been developed in Asia from a non-variegated parent, making it a sought-after hybrid among collectors.

Caring for Aeonium ‘Picasso’ is straightforward. It thrives in bright light to full sun, where its colours are most vivid. In Australia, it performs best in frost-free regions, preferring mild conditions between 10–25 °C. During the active growing season, provide moderate water and reduce watering during summer dormancy. Propagation is simple from stem cuttings, allowing gardeners to expand their collection with ease.

As the rosettes mature, they may produce tall conical clusters of star-shaped, golden-yellow flowers in late winter to spring. After flowering, the individual rosette naturally dies back, but surrounding offsets continue to thrive. With its painterly colours, sculptural form, and relatively easy care, Aeonium ‘Picasso’ makes a rewarding and highly ornamental addition to any succulent collection.

Seasonal Colour & Plant Variation

Succulents naturally change in colour, size and form throughout the year. Many develop richer colours and more compact growth during periods of seasonal stress, particularly through cooler months and brighter conditions, while warmer or lower-light conditions may produce greener, softer growth.

The plant you receive may therefore vary from the product images depending on the season, its stage of growth and current growing conditions. These natural variations are part of the character of living plants and do not affect their quality or health.
