Aeonium arboreum 'Chanel'
Aeonium arboreum ‘Chanel’ is a spectacular variegated Aeonium renowned for its intense red, green, cream and burgundy foliage. At its colourful best, the rosettes can resemble polished toffee apples, with brilliant red outer colouring contrasting against darker green central markings and occasional luminous cream variegation through the developing foliage.
Seasonal Colour
One of the pleasures of growing ‘Chanel’ is watching its appearance change throughout the year. Stronger light can deepen the foliage towards burgundy, maroon and purple, while active growth can reveal brighter green and creamy tones towards the centre. Warm days combined with cooler nights can produce particularly striking colour.
‘Chanel’ is widely circulated as a variegated Aeonium associated with ‘Cornish Rose’ and is also sold under names including ‘Cornish Rose Variegated’. Its precise cultivar history has attracted some debate among specialist growers, so it is preferable not to overstate its parentage. What is beyond doubt is the cultivar's distinctive variegation and outstanding ornamental value.
Growing Aeonium ‘Chanel’
Plants develop an upright, branching habit, with rosettes carried at the ends of sturdy stems. Grow in bright light with gentle sun for good colour and compact growth, while protecting from prolonged harsh afternoon sun during extreme Australian summer conditions.
Use a freely draining succulent mix and water according to active growth rather than to a rigid schedule. Aeoniums generally grow most strongly from autumn through spring and slow during hotter weather, when watering should be reduced. Protect from significant frost and prolonged waterlogging.
