Crassula multicava variegated, also known as 'Fairy Crassula' variegated, is an intriguing succulent with its origins in South Africa. This plant is a natural selection and not commonly found in nurseries, making it a treasure for succulent collectors. The plant features deep green leaves that form in opposite pairs, with striking variegation that starts as bright yellow on new growth and matures to snow-white. Under stress, the leaves blush pink, creating a stunning visual effect.
This mat-forming ground cover is a hardy and easy-to-care-for plant that grows to around 20 cm tall and branches from the base to form a dense clump. It is a moderate to fast-growing perennial succulent that produces small, starry white to pinkish flowers with four petals and four sepals in winter. One cultivar, 'Purple Dragon,' has purple undersides to the leaves.
Crassula multicava variegated is resistant to droughts and low temperatures, above -3°C, and is a shade lover, though too much shade may negatively affect its color and flower quality. It is self-seeding and can also be multiplied by cuttings, and plantlets produced on the flower head will fall off and grow into independent plants. Due to its small size, it is suitable for potting in well-composted, clay soils.
The common form of this 'Fairy Crassula', having green leaves without the variegation, is found in forest margins, river and stream banks, and in coastal and subtropical thickets in mountainous regions of Natal, Eastern and Southern Cape in South Africa.
