Othonna capensis 'Ruby necklace'
Othonna capensis 'Ruby Necklace' is a colourful trailing succulent known for its slender ruby-red to purple stems, fleshy green leaves and bright yellow daisy-like flowers. Its cascading growth makes it particularly attractive in hanging baskets and elevated pots, where the stems can gradually spill well beyond the edge of the container.
From green to ruby red
One of the most distinctive characteristics of Ruby Necklace is its ability to change colour considerably according to season and growing conditions. During active growth the leaves can remain predominantly green, while stronger light, cooler temperatures and drier conditions can encourage increasingly rich shades of purple, burgundy and ruby red through both the foliage and stems.
These colour changes are natural and reversible. A greener Ruby Necklace is not necessarily lacking colour permanently; as growing conditions change, the deeper tones can return and intensify.
Trailing growth and yellow flowers
Ruby Necklace initially produces relatively upright growth before the slender stems lengthen and begin to trail. Established plants can develop numerous branching stems, eventually creating a dense cascade of colourful foliage.
Bright yellow, daisy-like flowers are produced above the foliage, creating a strong contrast against the purple and ruby tones of well-coloured plants. Flowering is most noticeable during active growth and can occur over an extended period under favourable conditions.
From Othonna to Crassothonna
This species has long been grown under the familiar botanical name Othonna capensis, which remains widely used in succulent cultivation. It is now botanically accepted as Crassothonna capensis, with Othonna capensis treated as a synonym. The species is native to the Cape Provinces of South Africa.
The familiar name Ruby Necklace refers particularly well to the rich red and purple colouring that the stems and foliage can develop under suitable conditions.
Growing Othonna capensis 'Ruby Necklace'
Grow in a free-draining succulent mix with plenty of bright light and good airflow. Good light encourages compact growth and stronger colour, although plants should be gradually acclimatised before exposure to intense Australian summer sun.
Water thoroughly when required, allowing the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings. Established plants tolerate dry periods well, but regular watering during active growth encourages plumper foliage and stronger growth. Avoid keeping the roots continuously wet and avoid excessive feeding, which can encourage softer growth.

The plant you receive may therefore vary from the product images depending on the season, its stage of growth and current growing conditions. These natural variations are part of the character of living plants and do not affect their quality or health.
