Othonna capensis variegated 'Opal Necklace' is a colourful variegated form of the familiar Ruby Necklace, combining its trailing growth with an unusually broad range of cream, yellow, green, pink, purple and red. The variegation ensures that the plant remains colourful even during active growth, while seasonal conditions can intensify the deeper pink, purple and ruby tones.
Opal-like variegation and changing colour
The fleshy leaves develop irregular combinations of green, cream and yellow, often overlaid with shades of pink, rose and purple. Together with the colourful stems, this creates the changing mixture of colours that inspired the name 'Opal Necklace'.
Colour varies considerably according to season and growing conditions. In our nursery we find that plants kept well hydrated develop plump, lush foliage while still retaining their variegation. During drier periods, or under stronger light and cooler conditions, the pink, purple and reddish tones can become considerably more pronounced.
Trailing growth
'Opal Necklace' develops slender, trailing stems that gradually spill over the sides of its container, making it particularly well suited to hanging baskets and elevated pots. The stems can branch as the plant matures, eventually producing a colourful cascading plant with foliage distributed along their length.
Its growth habit is inherited from the regular Ruby Necklace form, but the irregular variegation means individual stems and leaves can differ noticeably in colour. This natural variation gives each plant its own combination of markings.
From Othonna to Crassothonna
This plant has long been grown under the botanical name Othonna capensis, which remains widely used in succulent cultivation. The species is now botanically accepted as Crassothonna capensis, with Othonna capensis treated as a synonym. The species is native to the Cape Provinces of South Africa.
'Opal Necklace' is the cultivated variegated form. Its precise horticultural origin does not appear to be formally documented, so we do not attribute the variegated selection to a particular breeder or nursery.
Growing Othonna capensis variegated 'Opal Necklace'
Grow in a free-draining succulent mix with plenty of bright light and good airflow. Good light helps maintain compact growth and encourages stronger colour, although plants should be gradually acclimatised before exposure to intense Australian summer sun, particularly where the foliage contains large areas of pale variegation.
Water thoroughly when required, allowing the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings. Although established plants tolerate dry periods well, regular watering during active growth helps maintain fuller, plumper foliage. Avoid keeping the roots continuously wet.

The plant you receive may therefore vary from the product images depending on the season, its stage of growth and current growing conditions. These natural variations are part of the character of living plants and do not affect their quality or health.
Pickup is available in Seville, Yarra Valley VIC by appointment. Order online as normal and any shipping charge will be automatically refunded after collection, unless you would prefer to receive an additional plant of similar value instead.
