Adromischus cristatus var. zeyheri, commonly known as Crinkle Leaf Plant, is a delightful dwarf succulent that forms groups of stems. This variety, endemic to a small area in the Baviaanskloof, Eastern Cape, South Africa, is a light-green form of Adromischus cristatus and is distinguishable by its lack of aerial roots and glandular hairs on the leaves, inflorescences, and flowers. It is a part of the Stonecrop family, Crassulaceae, and was named after Karl LP Zeyher, a German naturalist and botanical explorer in South Africa from 1822.
This plant has stems up to 8 cm long, knobbly, not very branched, and without aerial roots, with fibrous roots at the base. Its larger leaves, which are widely triangular, wavy, and crimped at the margin, are oblong, light green, and waxy, measuring about 4-7 cm long and 2.2-5.5 cm wide. The inflorescence is 25-60 cm tall, with very small, sessile, white-cream flowers blooming in mid-summer. The fruit is a dry, many-seeded follicle.
Adromischus cristatus var. zeyheri is a hardy plant that can tolerate shady conditions and abuse, making it a popular choice for cultivation. It prefers well-drained soil in a partially shaded position and requires a minimum temperature of 5°C (but is hardy down to -7°C for short periods) with good drainage and dryness in winter to resist the cold. In the wild, it receives rain mostly in spring and fall, so it must have a very dry atmosphere.
Propagation is usually done through single leaves (leaf cuttings) or stem cuttings, as seed propagation is rarely used. Twist off a leaf and permit it to dry out for a couple of days, lay it on the soil, and insert the stem end partially into the soil. Bottom watering by immersing the container is recommended if grown in a container.
Adromischus cristatus var. zeyheri is a charming addition to any succulent collection with its unique features and easy care requirements.
