Adromischus leucophyllus

Adromischus leucophyllus is a compact South African succulent distinguished by its thick, pale grey-green to almost whitish leaves. A natural powdery wax coating gives the foliage its characteristic soft, glaucous appearance and is the feature behind the species name leucophyllus, meaning “white-leaved”.

Pale, Powdery Foliage

The fleshy leaves are broadly obovate to almost rounded and typically measure up to about 3 cm long. They are usually unspotted, although occasional plants in the wild develop a small number of purplish markings. Young leaves emerge greener before developing the characteristic pale powdery coating as they mature.

This waxy bloom is a natural feature of the plant and helps protect the foliage from excessive sunlight and moisture loss. The leaves detach relatively easily, which is also part of the species' natural method of vegetative reproduction.

Growth & Flowers

Adromischus leucophyllus initially forms a small cluster of short, sparsely branching stems. Older plants can gradually develop longer spreading or trailing stems, particularly when growing in protected positions. In its natural cliff habitat, mature specimens may become distinctly pendulous.

During summer, established plants produce slender upright flower stems bearing small tubular flowers. The flowers are predominantly white, with pink longitudinal markings along the narrow petals.

Western Cape Cliff Habitat

Adromischus leucophyllus is an accepted botanical species endemic to South Africa's Western Cape. It occurs in mountainous areas around Montagu, Robertson, Barrydale and De Doorns, where it grows in crevices and on ledges of quartzitic sandstone cliffs and rocky ridges.

Growing Adromischus leucophyllus

Grow in a free-draining succulent mix in a bright position with good airflow. Bright filtered light or morning sun suits the species well, while plants should be acclimatised gradually before exposure to stronger direct sunlight.

Water thoroughly when required and allow the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings. Avoid prolonged waterlogging, particularly during cooler conditions. Take care when handling the plant, as mature leaves can detach relatively easily.

Please note: From our experience growing, handling and shipping this variety of Adromischus, we consider it well suited to shipping. However, individual leaves can occasionally detach if the plant is physically disturbed during transit or unpacking. A small amount of leaf drop can therefore occur and does not in itself indicate that the plant is unhealthy.

In the wild, leaf detachment and subsequent rooting is a natural means of vegetative reproduction in Adromischus, helping the plants reproduce and persist in their natural habitat. If leaves become detached from your plant, simply lay the healthy leaves on the surface of a free-draining succulent mix in bright, protected light. New roots and shoots will often develop from the base of the leaf over the following weeks. Once roots and new growth begin to develop, gently nestle them into the growing medium and allow the new plant to establish.
