Adromischus 'Little Spheroid'

Adromischus 'Little Spheroid' is a miniature form associated with the highly variable Adromischus marianiae group, distinguished by its unusually short, plump and almost spherical leaves. The foliage ranges from grey-green through bronze and brown to reddish-purple, with a natural powdery coating often giving the leaves a softly muted appearance.

Small, Rounded Leaves

The most characteristic feature of 'Little Spheroid' is its remarkably rounded foliage. Individual leaves are thick and fleshy, generally reaching up to about 3 cm long but often remaining considerably shorter and broader, producing the pebble-like appearance characteristic of this plant.

Leaf colour varies considerably with season, light and growing conditions. Plants can be predominantly grey-green during periods of softer growth, while brighter conditions can bring bronze, ochre, brown, red and purplish tones to the foliage. The natural waxy bloom can also vary between leaves, sometimes producing conspicuous pale patches over the underlying colour.

Compact Growth & Flowers

'Little Spheroid' is naturally small and slow growing, developing short branching stems and gradually forming compact clusters. New leaves remain concentrated around the growing points, while established plants can develop numerous small branches over time.

Mature plants can produce slender upright inflorescences carrying small tubular flowers. The flowers are pale pink and approximately 12 mm long, providing a delicate contrast to the unusually thick, rounded foliage.

The Little Spheroid Name

'Little Spheroid' is a horticultural name associated with the Adromischus marianiae complex, a highly variable group native to arid parts of southern Africa. The name was published in 1998 in The Cactus File Handbook 3: Adromischus and has remained in cultivation for plants displaying this characteristic miniature, rounded-leaved form.

Plants under this name have been associated with the Namaqualand region of South Africa's Northern Cape. Because the precise status and origin of the cultivated form are not consistently documented, we retain the established horticultural name Adromischus 'Little Spheroid' rather than assigning it to a particular botanical variety.

Growing Adromischus 'Little Spheroid'

Grow in a very free-draining succulent mix in a bright position with good airflow. Good light helps maintain the plant's compact form and can encourage the bronze, brown, red and purplish foliage colours characteristic of well-coloured plants. Acclimatise gradually before exposure to intense direct sun.

Water thoroughly when required and allow the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings. Avoid prolonged waterlogging, particularly during cooler conditions. The thick, fleshy leaves provide substantial water storage, allowing established plants to tolerate periods of dryness.

Please note: From our experience growing, handling and shipping this variety of Adromischus, we consider it well suited to shipping. However, individual leaves can occasionally detach if the plant is physically disturbed during transit or unpacking. A small amount of leaf drop can therefore occur and does not in itself indicate that the plant is unhealthy.

In the wild, leaf detachment and subsequent rooting is a natural means of vegetative reproduction in Adromischus, helping the plants reproduce and persist in their natural habitat. If leaves become detached from your plant, simply lay the healthy leaves on the surface of a free-draining succulent mix in bright, protected light. New roots and shoots will often develop from the base of the leaf over the following weeks. Once roots and new growth begin to develop, gently nestle them into the growing medium and allow the new plant to establish.
