Adromischus marianae f. herrei 'Narrow Form'

Adromischus marianae f. herrei 'Narrow Form' is a compact horticultural form of the plant traditionally known as Adromischus marianiae f. herrei, distinguished by its narrower, more elongated leaves. Like the regular form, its foliage develops a strongly textured, warty surface, but the leaves are typically more tapered and pointed.

Narrow, Heavily Textured Leaves

The thick fleshy leaves are elongated and irregularly tubercled, producing the rough surface characteristic of plants cultivated under the herrei name. Individual leaves vary naturally in width and shape, but are generally noticeably narrower than those of the more rounded regular form.

Foliage colour can range from green and yellow-green through bronze, pink, red and purplish tones according to the individual plant, season, light and growing conditions. The raised texture can accentuate this colouring, with different areas of a leaf developing contrasting shades.

Growth & Flowers

Adromischus marianae f. herrei 'Narrow Form' is slow growing and develops short branching stems, gradually forming compact clusters. New leaves remain concentrated around the active growing points, while mature plants can develop numerous branches over time.

Established plants may produce slender upright flower stems bearing small tubular flowers. As with other forms traditionally included under herrei, the flowers are generally pale greenish with pink to reddish colouring towards the lobes.

A Horticultural Form of Herrei

'Narrow Form' is a horticultural name used to distinguish these narrow-leaved plants from the broader and more rounded forms commonly grown as Adromischus marianiae f. herrei. The narrow form does not currently have separate formal botanical status.

The name f. herrei itself is also no longer accepted as a separate botanical form under current Kew classification. It is treated as a synonym of Adromischus marianiae var. immaculatus, although the older herrei name remains widely used in cultivation for these characteristically rough, heavily textured plants.

Growing Adromischus marianae f. herrei 'Narrow Form'

Grow in a very free-draining succulent mix in a bright position with good airflow. Good light helps maintain compact growth and can encourage stronger bronze, pink, red and purplish foliage tones. Acclimatise plants gradually before exposure to intense direct sun.

Water thoroughly when required and allow the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings. Avoid prolonged waterlogging, particularly during cooler conditions. The thick succulent leaves store moisture well, and established plants tolerate periods of dryness.

Please note: From our experience growing, handling and shipping this variety of Adromischus, we consider it well suited to shipping. However, individual leaves can occasionally detach if the plant is physically disturbed during transit or unpacking. A small amount of leaf drop can therefore occur and does not in itself indicate that the plant is unhealthy.

In the wild, leaf detachment and subsequent rooting is a natural means of vegetative reproduction in Adromischus, helping the plants reproduce and persist in their natural habitat. If leaves become detached from your plant, simply lay the healthy leaves on the surface of a free-draining succulent mix in bright, protected light. New roots and shoots will often develop from the base of the leaf over the following weeks. Once roots and new growth begin to develop, gently nestle them into the growing medium and allow the new plant to establish.
