Aeonium 'Bronze Medal' is a distinctive compact Aeonium valued for its masses of small rosettes, unusual reddish markings and rich bronze seasonal colour. Rather than producing a few large rosettes, it develops numerous branching stems that gradually form a dense, multi-headed specimen.

Bronze Colour & Distinctive Markings

The small fleshy leaves are green with irregular burgundy to reddish markings and a slightly sticky or glutinous surface. During active cooler-season growth the rosettes can appear predominantly green, while stronger light and seasonal changes can bring out bronze, copper and reddish tones.

Colour and markings naturally vary between plants and throughout the year, giving established specimens considerable character.

Origin & Connection to Aeonium sedifolium

'Bronze Medal' was introduced by the Huntington Botanical Gardens through its International Succulent Introductions programme in 2002. Its complete parentage remains unknown, but its compact red-marked rosettes, glutinous foliage and growth habit strongly suggest Aeonium sedifolium as one parent. The second parent has not been established.

The name 'Bronze Medal' refers to the bronze colouring developed by its small, medallion-like rosettes during summer dormancy.

A Variegated Counterpart

Collectors who enjoy the compact branching form of 'Bronze Medal' may also be interested in Aeonium Bronze Medal Variegated 'Sweet Tea'. It retains the characteristic small-rosetted habit while adding striking cream, green and pink variegation.

Compact Branching Growth

Each branch terminates in a small rosette, and continued branching eventually creates broad clusters containing numerous closely spaced heads. This naturally compact structure makes 'Bronze Medal' especially attractive as a mature container specimen.

Growing Aeonium 'Bronze Medal'

Grow in a free-draining succulent mix in a bright position. Good light encourages compact growth and stronger bronze colouring, although some protection from intense Australian summer afternoon sun may be beneficial depending on climate and acclimatisation.

Growth is strongest during the cooler part of the year and slows during hot summer conditions. Its summer dormancy is not particularly severe, however, so plants do not necessarily need to remain completely dry. Water according to the plant's condition, allowing the growing medium to drain freely and avoiding prolonged waterlogging.
