Albuca spiralis ‘Frizzle Sizzle’ is a distinctive bulbous succulent recognised for its tightly coiled, corkscrew-like green leaves and fragrant flowers. It is a selected cultivar of Albuca spiralis, a South African species native to the Cape region, and has been specifically bred for stronger spiralling and thicker foliage than typical forms of the species.
Distinctive corkscrew foliage
‘Frizzle Sizzle’ produces a basal rosette of narrow, fleshy green leaves that twist into pronounced spirals as they develop. Bright light is important for maintaining compact growth and strongly curled foliage; under insufficient light, the leaves may become longer and less tightly coiled. Established bulbs can reach approximately 8 cm in diameter, while the foliage generally remains relatively low and compact.
Fragrant seasonal flowers
Mature plants produce upright flower stems rising well above the curled foliage. The nodding flowers are greenish-yellow and strongly fragrant, with the original cultivar description recording a distinctive spicy fragrance. Flowering plants may reach approximately 20 cm high, with multiple flowers carried along each stem.
A selected form of Albuca spiralis
‘Frizzle Sizzle’ originated from a planned breeding program in the Netherlands aimed at developing Albuca spiralis with strongly spiralling leaves. An unnamed selection was self-pollinated in 2005, and breeder Gerardus Adrianus Maria Zuidgeest selected ‘Frizzle Sizzle’ from the resulting seedlings in 2007. The cultivar was subsequently propagated vegetatively to maintain its characteristic form.
Growing Albuca spiralis ‘Frizzle Sizzle’
Grow in a free-draining succulent mix and provide plenty of bright light or gentle direct sun to encourage strong, compact curls. In Australian conditions, some protection from intense summer afternoon sun is advisable, particularly for container-grown plants.
This bulb has a pronounced seasonal growth cycle. Water more regularly while actively growing, allowing the growing medium to drain freely and partially dry between waterings. As the foliage naturally yellows and dies back during dormancy, reduce watering considerably. Resume more regular watering when fresh growth emerges. Avoid keeping dormant bulbs continuously wet, as good drainage remains essential throughout the year.

Succulents naturally change in colour, size and form throughout the year. Many develop richer colours and more compact growth during periods of seasonal stress, particularly through cooler months and brighter conditions, while warmer or lower-light conditions may produce greener, softer growth.
The plant you receive may therefore vary from the product images depending on the season, its stage of growth and current growing conditions. These natural variations are part of the character of living plants and do not affect their quality or health.
Pickup is available in Seville, Yarra Valley VIC by appointment. Order online as normal and any shipping charge will be automatically refunded after collection, unless you would prefer to receive an additional plant of similar value instead.

This is my 15th order from John and Norma, plants always arrive in perfect condition and exactly as they as shown in the pics. Postage was $17 I can see that it actually cost $12.30 and I understand there's also the box but it's getting a little steep. This order was only small consisting of two plants totalling $33 so by the time you add on $17 taking it to $50 it's expensive!
