Aylostera albiflora, also known as Rebutia albiflora, is a delightful miniature cactus species hailing from the gorges of Rio Playa, northeast of Tarija, Bolivia. This captivating cactus, first described by Friedrich Ritter in 1963, is cherished for its compact form and striking flowers.
The plant's spherical body measures 18-25 mm in diameter and features distinct tubercles, with areoles scattered across its surface. Its spines, yellowish with a brownish base, stand erect and range from 3-5 mm long. Each plant boasts approximately 15 radial and 5 central spines.
One of the most enchanting aspects of Aylostera albiflora is its profuse blooming. In spring, it produces masses of white flowers, around 20-25 mm in diameter, each adorned with a pink central stripe. The flowers' petals, 10-12 mm long and 3-5 mm wide, are complemented by a tall floral tube covered in white bristles. The stamens are arranged in two rows, and the style extends up to 20 mm.
Aylostera albiflora thrives in partially shaded outdoor areas or sunny indoor spots. It requires good light for optimal flowering. This cactus is quite resilient, capable of surviving long periods without water, and grows most rapidly in warmer months. For best results, water it throughout the year, but allow the soil to dry out between waterings to maintain its compact shape.
Feeding should be minimal; a 25% strength fertiliser once a month during the growing season suffices. Excessive nitrogen can lead to larger but less colourful plants. Repotting is optional, as Aylostera albiflora can outgrow its pot or be transplanted into any well-draining mix during warmer months.
Perfect for succulent enthusiasts, Aylostera albiflora is an easy-to-care-for plant that brings a touch of South American charm to any collection.
