Crassula aborescens 'Giant Silver Dollar'

Crassula arborescens 'Giant Silver Dollar' is a striking, large-leaved form of the Silver Dollar Jade, admired for its exceptionally thick, fleshy foliage and bold architectural appearance. Compared with the more silvery form of Silver Dollar Jade, this distinctive selection develops noticeably more substantial leaves with a greener grey colouring, giving the plant a heavier, more robust character.

About Crassula arborescens 'Giant Silver Dollar'

Crassula arborescens is a succulent shrub native to South Africa's Cape region and belongs to the Crassulaceae family. Commonly known as the Silver Dollar Jade, the species is distinguished by its broad, rounded leaves and attractive contrasting margins.

'Giant Silver Dollar' is grown for its particularly substantial foliage. The thick, fleshy leaves are arranged in opposite pairs along sturdy stems and develop a soft green to grey-green colouring with attractive pink to red margins. Fine darker speckling may also appear across the leaf surfaces, adding further character to individual plants.

Growth Habit & Foliage

Initially compact, 'Giant Silver Dollar' gradually develops sturdy branching stems and an increasingly substantial shrub-like form. Older plants can develop thickened, woody trunks and an attractive miniature tree appearance.

The unusually thick leaves are the defining feature of this form. Their colouring varies naturally with sunlight, temperature and seasonal growing conditions, with brighter light often encouraging stronger reddish margins. Plants grown in insufficient light may develop softer growth and less pronounced colouring.

Although naturally slow to moderate growing, mature specimens can eventually become impressive feature plants when given sufficient space and favourable conditions.

Flowers

Well-established plants may produce clusters of small, star-shaped flowers in shades of white to pale pink. Flowering is more commonly seen on mature outdoor specimens and varies according to seasonal temperatures, light exposure and growing conditions.

Growing Crassula arborescens 'Giant Silver Dollar'

Grow 'Giant Silver Dollar' in a bright position with several hours of direct sunlight to encourage sturdy stems, compact growth and attractive foliage colouring. In Australian conditions, established plants generally tolerate sunny positions well, although younger or recently acclimatised plants may benefit from some protection during periods of extreme summer heat.

Plant in a very free-draining succulent potting mix and water thoroughly once the growing medium has dried. Its exceptionally fleshy leaves store considerable moisture, making established plants drought tolerant. Reduce watering during cooler or persistently wet weather and avoid prolonged moisture around the roots.

This variety performs particularly well in containers, where its growth can be managed through gradual repotting. It is also suitable for well-drained garden beds, rockeries and succulent landscapes. Protect from heavy frost and prolonged winter rainfall, and avoid excessive feeding that may encourage softer growth.

Giant Silver Dollar or Silver Dollar Jade?
