Crassula arborescens 'Giant Silver Dollar' is a distinctive large-leaved form of the Silver Dollar Plant, valued for its exceptionally thick foliage and bold architectural appearance. Compared with the traditional Silver Dollar Jade, this selection develops noticeably fleshier leaves with a greener grey colour, giving the plant a stronger, more robust presence in pots and succulent gardens.
Native to South Africa, Crassula arborescens belongs to the Crassulaceae family and is well adapted to dry conditions. Over time, plants develop sturdy branching stems that support masses of rounded coin-shaped leaves, creating an attractive shrub-like specimen. The thick succulent foliage stores water efficiently, allowing the plant to tolerate extended dry periods once established.
The broad leaves are one of the standout features of this form. Their substantial thickness and smooth grey-green colouring create a striking contrast to many finer-textured succulents and make this an excellent choice for feature pots, rockeries, drought-tolerant landscapes and collector displays. In bright conditions, the leaf margins may develop subtle reddish tones that further enhance its ornamental appeal.
Like other forms of Crassula arborescens, mature plants can produce clusters of small star-shaped white to pale pink flowers from late winter through spring. These blooms rise above the foliage and provide an attractive seasonal display while helping to attract pollinators to the garden.
Crassula arborescens 'Giant Silver Dollar' performs best in a free-draining succulent potting mix and a bright position with plenty of sunlight. Strong light encourages compact growth and good foliage colour, while established plants require minimal watering and are highly drought tolerant. As with most succulents, avoiding prolonged wet conditions is the key to maintaining healthy growth.
Easy to grow and highly rewarding, this impressive form offers a bold alternative to the classic Silver Dollar Plant and makes an eye-catching addition to any succulent collection.
