Crassula atropurpurea var. anomala is an attractive compact succulent native to the Western Cape of South Africa. It develops thick, succulent stems carrying closely arranged, fleshy leaves and is particularly appealing for the rich colour it can develop under brighter light and seasonal stress.

Compact growth and distinctive foliage

The fleshy leaves are typically obovate to rounded, with green to yellow-green colouring and often reddish margins. Both the leaves and stems may be covered with fine erect hairs, a useful distinguishing characteristic of var. anomala. The stems are relatively thick and range from spreading to upright, gradually branching to produce a compact, low-growing plant.

Rich seasonal colour

One of the most attractive features of Crassula atropurpurea var. anomala is its ability to change colour considerably with growing conditions. Plants may remain predominantly green during periods of softer growth, while brighter light, cooler weather and drier conditions can bring out increasingly strong red, burgundy and purple tones. This natural variation means the plant can look noticeably different throughout the year.

Flowers and botanical character

Flowering plants produce slender upright stems carrying clusters of small cream to pale-coloured tubular flowers. Although individually modest, the flowers have an unusual structure: the petals possess prominent dorsal appendages that are channelled on their inner surface. This is one of the botanical features used to distinguish var. anomala from the other recognised varieties within the highly variable Crassula atropurpurea complex.

Growing Crassula atropurpurea var. anomala

Grow in a free-draining succulent mix in a bright position. Good light encourages compact growth and stronger foliage colour, although some protection from intense Australian summer afternoon sun can be beneficial, particularly for plants grown in small pots.

Water thoroughly during active growth, allowing the growing medium to dry between waterings, and keep drier during colder periods. Its compact, branching habit makes it particularly well suited to pots, rockeries and smaller succulent displays where its fine foliage detail and changing seasonal colour can be appreciated.
