Crassula 'Baby's Necklace' is a compact hybrid succulent with small, rounded, fleshy green leaves tightly stacked in opposing pairs along slender stems. The leaves develop distinctive rose-pink to red margins, creating the appearance of beads threaded along a baby's necklace, from which the cultivar takes its name.
Origins & Parentage
'Baby's Necklace' was created by horticulturist Myron Kimnach in 1962 from a cross between Crassula rupestris subsp. marnieriana and Crassula perforata subsp. kougaensis. Both parents originate from South Africa, and the hybrid combines the closely stacked foliage characteristic of this group with particularly attractive contrasting leaf margins.
The cultivar was subsequently distributed through the International Succulent Introductions programme in 1978. It was distinguished from the related 'Jade Necklace' by its thinner stems, more pendulous growth and brightly coloured leaf margins.
Stacked Green Leaves & Rose-Pink Edges
The leaves are small, thick and somewhat button-like, with successive opposing pairs packed closely around the stem. Their base colour ranges from soft green to minty or grey-green, while the margins develop rose-pink, red and sometimes deeper burgundy tones.
The strength of this colouring varies with season and growing conditions. Good light generally produces stronger pink to red margins, while plants grown under softer conditions tend to remain greener. This seasonal variation is a normal characteristic of the cultivar.
Growth & Flowers
'Baby's Necklace' initially forms clumps of upright stems, generally remaining relatively compact. As the stems lengthen they can reach around 30 cm and gradually arch or become pendulous, making established plants suitable for pots and hanging containers as well as succulent gardens.
From late spring into summer, mature plants can produce terminal clusters of small white flowers held above the stacked foliage.
Growing Crassula 'Baby's Necklace'
Grow in a free-draining succulent mix in a bright position with good airflow. Good light helps maintain compact growth and encourages the characteristic rose-pink to red leaf margins. Plants can tolerate some direct sun, but should be acclimatised gradually and protected from prolonged intense Australian summer afternoon sun where necessary.
Water thoroughly when required and allow the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings. Avoid prolonged waterlogging, particularly during cool conditions when growth and water use are reduced. Established plants tolerate periods of dryness well, although excessively prolonged dryness can result in some leaf shrivelling.

Succulents naturally change in colour, size and form throughout the year. Many develop richer colours and more compact growth during periods of seasonal stress, particularly through cooler months and brighter conditions, while warmer or lower-light conditions may produce greener, softer growth.
The plant you receive may therefore vary from the product images depending on the season, its stage of growth and current growing conditions. These natural variations are part of the character of living plants and do not affect their quality or health.
Pickup is available in Seville, Yarra Valley VIC by appointment. Order online as normal and any shipping charge will be automatically refunded after collection, unless you would prefer to receive an additional plant of similar value instead.

Just give it plenty of sun and ensure it's well watered once dry. They soon plump up and colour beautifully, especially in summer.
