This new Variegated form is likely a Nursery produced cultivar created from the original Crassula Blue Bird that was introduced and described by Dr. B.K Boom in the Dutch journal Succulenta in 1963 as Crassula portulacea 'Blauwe Vogel' (which translates to "blue bird"). It was long thought to be a hybrid of Crassula ovata and Crassula arborescens, but after receiving the leaves and inflorescences of this supposed hybrid, Toelken explained that it is identical to the plant he had described as Crassula arborescens subsp. undulatifolia. Therefore, Crassula 'Blue Bird' is the same as C. arborescens subsp. undulatifolia, a subspecies with two somewhat different forms in cultivation.
Crassula 'Blue Bird' variegated is an interesting and rewarding plant to grow, providing year-round foliage colour. It is best propagated by division, offsets, or stem cuttings. Propagation by division involves gently removing the plant from its container and separating the offsets, making sure each has some roots attached. Replant the offsets in a well-draining potting mix suitable for succulents. Propagation by stem cuttings involves taking a stem cutting from the parent plant, allowing the cut to dry and callus over for a day or two, and then planting it in a well-draining potting mix. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, and in a few weeks, roots should start to form.
With its unique and distinct foliage pattern, Crassula 'Blue Bird' variegated is sure to be a standout selection in any garden or container display. Whether you are an experienced gardener or new to gardening, this succulent is an excellent choice, providing a pop of colour and interest to any space.
