Crassula clavata
Crassula clavata, commonly known as Club-shaped Crassula or Purple Butterfly, is a compact, tufted succulent native to South Africa, where it occurs from Namaqualand through parts of the Cape region to the Little Karoo. In habitat it is typically found growing in rock crevices, on stony slopes and in very shallow soils over sandstone and quartzite outcrops.
Distinctive club-shaped foliage
The species name clavata refers to the characteristic shape of its fleshy leaves. These are generally oblanceolate, obovate or elliptic, approximately 20–40 mm long, occasionally larger, and are broader towards the tip than at the base. The leaves are arranged in opposite pairs and often spread close to the ground, gradually forming several basal rosettes and low, compact clumps.
Rich natural colour
One of the most distinctive features of Crassula clavata is its naturally strong foliage colour. Wild plants are commonly purplish red, although green and yellowish-green forms also occur. In cultivation, brighter light and cooler seasonal conditions can intensify the red, burgundy and purple tones, while plants grown under softer conditions may remain greener. This natural variation can give the plant a noticeably different appearance through the seasons.
Flowers and growth habit
Mature plants produce elongated flower stems rising approximately 10–20 cm above the foliage, sometimes higher. These carry numerous small flower clusters arranged along the inflorescence. The individual flowers are tiny, tubular and cream to pale yellow, creating a delicate contrast with the darker foliage.
Growing Crassula clavata
Grow in a free-draining succulent mix with plenty of bright light. Its natural occurrence in shallow, rocky soils reflects its preference for excellent drainage and avoidance of prolonged wet conditions. Water thoroughly during active growth, allowing the growing medium to dry between waterings, and reduce watering during colder periods.
Its low, compact habit makes Crassula clavata particularly well suited to small pots, rockeries, alpine-style succulent displays and mixed collections where its unusual foliage shape and seasonal colour can be appreciated at close range.
