Crassula muscosa variegata, also known as Watch Chain, is a unique and charming succulent plant that originates from semi-arid and arid Karoo areas of Southern Africa and southern Namibia. It is a small and dense, scrambling bushy perennial succulent, growing up to 30cm tall, with slender branching stems that are slightly woody and densely covered by small, scale-like, neatly overlapping leaves arranged in four rows. The light green and cream-colored leaves are tiny, measuring only 2-8mm long and 1-4mm broad, and are densely packed around the thin stem, forming a square mass.
This plant is a variegated form of Crassula muscosa and is particularly attractive due to its silver-grey variety. It is commonly known as Watch Chain because of its unique appearance that resembles a chain made of tiny leaves. This succulent produces small, greenish-yellow flowers in spring that are 5-petalled, and the plant prefers to grow in rocky habitats, but it can also be found on plains.
Crassula muscosa variegata is easy to care for and can thrive in part or full coastal sun to light shade or indoors. If grown indoors, it is best to place it in a room that gets plenty of sunlight, such as near a southern-facing window. This plant has typical watering needs for a succulent, and it's best to use the "soak and dry" method, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
During the growing season, Watch Chain needs to be fed with a controlled-release fertilizer or weak liquid solution on a weekly basis. It is not cold-hardy and should be brought indoors when the temperature falls below 0°C. In summer, it needs more water and should not be exposed to full sun, as it only values brightness but would suffer under excessive sunlight. When not provided with these growing conditions, the plant can begin to dry and stiffen, usually starting from the base of the stem up to the tips.
In summary, Crassula muscosa variegata is an intriguing and charming succulent that is easy to care for and has a unique appearance that resembles a chain made of tiny leaves. It can be a great addition to your succulent collection or indoor plants, adding interest to your decor.
