Crassula ovata ‘Ruby’ is a compact and highly ornamental form of the classic jade plant, prized for its glossy green leaves that develop rich ruby-red edges and blushes when grown in bright light. This striking colour contrast intensifies during cooler months, making it a standout succulent for pots, patios, and sunny indoor positions.

Native to South Africa, Crassula ovata evolved in rocky, semi-arid environments where excellent drainage and seasonal rainfall shaped its thick, water-storing foliage and woody stems. ‘Ruby’ is a selected cultivar grown for enhanced red pigmentation, while retaining the tough, adaptable nature that jade plants are known for. Over time, it forms a dense, shrub-like structure with a natural bonsai appearance.

Slow-growing and long-lived, Crassula ovata ‘Ruby’ typically reaches around 50–60 cm in height and width, making it well suited to containers or feature plantings in sheltered garden beds. Mature plants may reward you with clusters of small, star-shaped white to soft pink flowers during autumn and winter, adding seasonal interest.

This drought-tolerant succulent prefers full sun to bright, indirect light, with increased sun exposure encouraging stronger red tones. Plant in a free-draining cactus or succulent mix and water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry between watering. It is frost-sensitive but thrives outdoors year-round in warm to temperate Australian climates, or as an indoor plant in cooler regions.

Often associated with prosperity and longevity, Crassula ovata ‘Ruby’ combines symbolic appeal with durability, making it a reliable and attractive choice for both new collectors and seasoned succulent growers.
