Crassula 'Red Pagoda' is a colourful and highly distinctive succulent celebrated for its tightly stacked foliage, geometric form and brilliant red colouring. Believed to be a cultivated form of Crassula capitella, this compact variety originates from a group of species native to South Africa, where many Crassula thrive in rocky, well-drained habitats. Its architectural appearance and vibrant seasonal colour have made it a favourite among succulent enthusiasts and collectors worldwide.
The fleshy, triangular leaves are arranged in precise opposite pairs, creating the pagoda-like columns that give the plant its common name. New growth typically emerges in shades of bright green to chartreuse before gradually transforming to rich tones of crimson, scarlet and burgundy. The most intense colour develops when plants are grown in full sun and exposed to cooler, drier conditions, resulting in exceptionally compact growth and beautifully defined leaf stacking.
Unlike the larger-growing forms, the standard Red Pagoda remains relatively compact, usually reaching around 10 to 20 cm in height while spreading through branching stems and offsets. Over time it can form colourful clusters that work beautifully in containers, rockeries, succulent bowls and waterwise garden displays. Its naturally dense habit also makes it an excellent choice for adding contrast among softer rosette-forming succulents.
During summer, mature plants may produce slender flower spikes topped with clusters of small star-shaped white flowers, often with a subtle pink tint. These delicate blooms provide an attractive contrast to the vivid foliage and add another layer of seasonal interest.
Crassula 'Red Pagoda' thrives in a free-draining succulent potting mix and requires minimal maintenance once established. Water thoroughly when the soil has dried completely, then allow it to dry again before rewatering. Its drought tolerance, vibrant colour and unique architectural form make it an eye-catching addition to any succulent collection, whether grown as a feature specimen or mass planted for dramatic visual impact.
