Echeveria agavoides 'Lipstick', also known as Echeveria agavoides 'Red Edge', is an eye-catching succulent that is sure to make a statement in any garden or indoor collection. This naturally occurring cultivar of Echeveria agavoides is native to high elevation rocky outcroppings in the plateau region of central Mexico (San Luis Potosi). The plant has distinctive apple-green to yellowish-green leaves with vivid red-pink edges that increase in intensity when exposed to high heat and low water conditions. The leaves terminate in a spine, reminiscent of an agave, and are fleshy, making them difficult to detach without breaking.
Echeveria agavoides 'Lipstick' is an evergreen, unbranching succulent that forms clumps of individual rosettes around 6 cm tall and up to 30 cm in width. The stemless rosettes are crisp, with leaves that grow up to 8 cm long and 4 cm wide. This cultivar is smaller than many of its other cultivars and grows solitary or slowly produces offsets.
In the summer, Echeveria agavoides 'Lipstick' produces a captivating 4-5 branching inflorescence, which blooms from a long, slender cyme up to 25 cm tall. The flowers are pinkish-red, with dark-yellow tips on the petals, and are scarlet red to yellowish-rose in color. This succulent is naturally pollinated by birds and is known to attract hummingbirds to pollinator gardens.
Echeveria agavoides 'Lipstick' needs well-draining soil to avoid rot in cool weather. It is best kept on the drier side in cool winter weather and should not be overwatered as it can be prone to root rot. The plant will fail in water-logged soils. Aphids are common in spring and summer on the inflorescences and can be controlled and dislodged with a gentle water jet.
This plant is fast-growing for an echeveria and needs to be fed with slow-release fertilizer in spring. If pot grown, it should be repotted every other year in spring. Remove spent flower stalks and dried lower leaves as desired.
In conclusion, Echeveria agavoides 'Lipstick' is a stunning succulent that is perfect for adding color and texture to your garden or indoor collection. With its striking red-pink edges and easy care requirements, it is a must-have for succulent enthusiasts and beginners alike.
