Echeveria agavoides 'Rubra' is a striking succulent known for its sharp-tipped, fleshy leaves that form compact rosettes. This evergreen perennial displays an incredible gradient of colours, ranging from bright green at the base to deep ruby red at the tips, with the most intense hues appearing along the leaf margins. Under full sun and cool temperatures, the red shades become even more vivid, making this variety particularly eye-catching in succulent arrangements and garden beds.
A cultivated selection of Echeveria agavoides, this form shares the species’ signature resemblance to Agave, with its triangular, pointed leaves. The species itself is native to Mexico, where it thrives in rocky, well-draining soils. 'Rubra' is notable for its striking colour contrast, enhanced by dry conditions and high light exposure. The undersides of the leaves may develop subtle golden flecking, adding further visual interest. Over time, this variety can form clusters, though it tends to remain more solitary compared to other Echeveria species.
In late winter to spring, Echeveria agavoides 'Rubra' produces tall flower spikes adorned with delicate yellow, bell-shaped blooms. These flowers attract pollinators and add seasonal charm to its already dramatic foliage.
For best results, provide full sun and a well-draining succulent mix. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. This variety tolerates mild frosts but should be protected from extreme cold. Whether grown in pots or as part of a xeriscape garden, its bold colour and sculptural form make it a standout feature in any collection.
